Rick Perry says he was just being himself when he gave a speech in New Hampshire last week that became a web sensation, and that he wasn’t under the influence.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Perry was asked about the speech, which featured a wilder-and-crazier governor than national audiences have seen. He said the talk was "pretty typical" for him.
“I've probably given 1,000 speeches,” the Texas governor told the Chronicle. “There are some that have been probably boring, some that have been animated, some that have been in between," he said.
Perry was asked about speculation that his back surgery last summer has required him to take pain medication.
"I had spine surgery on the first of July, but I ran this morning," he said, adding that he was not taking pain medication or anything else before the speech. He also addressed Jon Stewart’s suggestion it looked as if he had been drinking. “It wasn't that either," Perry said. "It's not that I wouldn't love to sit down with Jon and have a glass of wine — if he’ll buy.” From his perspective, Perry said, the speech was a success. “The people there were responding to the speech . . . clapping at all the right places -- and there was a standing ovation at the end," he said.
In New Hampshire on Thursday, conservative activists complained media coverage of Perry's speech had taken the focus off more substantive issues, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

These people were in the room with Rick Perry, and they say he was not drunk. Those people who do drive by insults with nothing to back those insults up are only trashing themselves. Lying is simply wrong, and to say that Rick Perry was drunk or high simply because you don’t like him is shameful.
I watched the entire speech and thought it was just fine (quite good actually. Don’t know what the big deal is.

Yeah, a friend and I both agreed he was more likeable as the “goofy” Rick Perry than as the “serious” one we’ve seen in the debates. I think a lot of the stumbling that he’s been criticized for in the debates is due to him second-guessing himself and suppressing his natural responses because he wants to look more presidential.
I agree. I’m sure it’s hard to take the jokes etc., when you would really like to just be yourself. He will never satisfy the msm, so why try. IMO
No one was able to prove Rush Limbaugh was addicted to Oxycontin until Rush came out and admitted his addiction.
And, I doubt that any Perry campaign supporters or staff are going to come out and say “Perry has a drinking and/or drug problem”.
All I can say, as many others have state, Perry looks a half a bubble off. If this is his typical way he interacts with folks I think that's a problem.
I wouldn’t mention Rush. His dealer turned him in after they were busted.
Maybe it was ecstasy. That makes you drink a lot of water and act goofy.
Look, before Perry ever ran I read about him and said, “that’s the guy we need, I hope he runs”.
When he announced, I was ecstatic (without drugs).
Then I sat through the debates, then speeches, the bloopers, the dumb remarks.
I became very depressed for awhile, especially when Sarah failed to ride in and save the day.
Then I started warming up to Cain, but I was always wary of him, his lack of experience, his inability to keep a story on-narrative (not just the stupid bimbo allegations).
Now I’m more depressed than ever.
And I don’t drink or drug, so all I can do is sit and watch the sinking of our conservative ship. Which I am on.

The organizer of the event, not necessarily a Perry supporter came out and said he had not been drinking and he had been with him before, during and after the debate.
By the way, did you watch the unedited video or are just running with the Romney splice and edit hatchet job and talking points?
You do realize he was speaking at an evangelical christian event. The most potent beverage was probably unsweet tea.

“I can tell you unequivocally he wasn’t drinking at the event and he hadn’t been drinking prior to the event,” Kevin Smith, the executive director of Cornerstone Action, the conservative group that hosted the event, told The Hill. “I was sitting with him, and I found him to be very engaging with all of the people he was talking with, he was very articulate.”
Over the past three days, bloggers and TV commentators have repeatedly speculated that the Texas governor was drunk or on drugs during the unusually animated performance.
Smith told The Hill that he was shocked by the national response to the speech, which has been viewed more than 600,000 times on YouTube. He said the address was well-received by the conservative audience.
“When I started seeing all of the blog stuff going up on Sunday and the video going viral it caught me by surprise,” said Smith. “He was definitely more animated than we’ve seen him during the campaign but the reports that he was buzzed or whatever never crossed any of our minds.”
Perry said today in Iowa that he thought he had delivered a “good speech” in New Hampshire. His campaign aides have not responded to our questions about whether the governor had been medication for his back or had consumed any alcohol before speaking.

The hatchet job was created from a single speech. Ronald Reagan gave thousands of speeches in his life. Do you think you could create a montage of moments that would make Reagan look that bad? And I don't mean misstatements out of context, I mean just plain goofy. Take all of Reagan's speeches. Take a month off your job. Cut'n'paste, cut'n'paste, cut'n'paste. Could you come up with a "hatchet job" on Reagan that remotely resembled this?
Don't like the Reagan example? Too unfair? Ok, you say who. Who could you do this to? Whose speeches could you edit to come up with a goofy presentation like this? Who? Cain? Palin? Gingrich? Dole? Nixon? Agnew? Goldwater?
I'm really curious who else you think would be vulnerable to this kind of hatchet job?
