Rick Perry says he was just being himself when he gave a speech in New Hampshire last week that became a web sensation, and that he wasnt under the influence.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Perry was asked about the speech, which featured a wilder-and-crazier governor than national audiences have seen. He said the talk was "pretty typical" for him.
I've probably given 1,000 speeches, the Texas governor told the Chronicle. There are some that have been probably boring, some that have been animated, some that have been in between," he said.
Perry was asked about speculation that his back surgery last summer has required him to take pain medication.
"I had spine surgery on the first of July, but I ran this morning," he said, adding that he was not taking pain medication or anything else before the speech. He also addressed Jon Stewarts suggestion it looked as if he had been drinking. It wasn't that either," Perry said. "It's not that I wouldn't love to sit down with Jon and have a glass of wine if hell buy. From his perspective, Perry said, the speech was a success. The people there were responding to the speech . . . clapping at all the right places -- and there was a standing ovation at the end," he said.
In New Hampshire on Thursday, conservative activists complained media coverage of Perry's speech had taken the focus off more substantive issues, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

Glad he noticed!
If it weren’t for the Herman Cain bomb this would have gone more than You Tube Viral.

For those that might have missed a “Pretty Typical” happy go lucky optimistic man.
I think I liked Perry The Debater better.
Rick Perry is an imbecile who thinks he can buy the election with millions of dollars of special interest money and high priced handlers. His high-priced handlers are now viciously going after Herman Cain.
Rick Perry is not of the people.
Rick Perry is what we are fighting against.
.
Watched the video. Perry is odd in a kind of small-town, old-fashioned way. Reminds me of confused, but pleasant, Little League umpire.
Perfect! GWB and Obama all rolled into one!
He speaks like that in informal gatherings in Texas.
But I guess sex and alcohol make better subjects than the real issues.
When SOMEONE says they SAW PERRY guzzling booze I don’t believe it. Nothing but a smear by the msm.
Motive.
PROVE IT!!!!
Don’t just talk about it.
PROVE IT. Don’t just talk about it. The reporters in TEXAS KNOW this is how Perry speaks when he is happy. You say he is drunk, PROVE IT. Where ARE the WITNESSES?
If this is typical, I’m surprised supporters have provided examples. I.e.: why is there not a youtube video w segments from various other speeches showing Perry in the same, loose, slappy-happy mood?
have = haven’t
That’s the impression I got also, and I’m not a Perry fan. I didn’t see anything scary, or crazy, or drunken...just a cheerful, somewhat corny, extroverted guy. Much less threatening or contemptible than any Demonrat candidate I can recall.
Rick Perry was stone-cold sober during energetic New Hampshire speech and drank “only water,” host says
“According to Rick Perry’s host at Friday night’s (in)famous speech in New Hampshire, the Texas governor drank “only water” at the event.
“I can tell you unequivocally he wasn’t drinking at the event and he hadn’t been drinking prior to the event,” Kevin Smith, the executive director of Cornerstone Action, the conservative group that hosted the event, told The Hill. “I was sitting with him, and I found him to be very engaging with all of the people he was talking with, he was very articulate.”
Video of full speech is also at the link above.
Perry was among friends, and gave an animated speech.
Romney couldn’t give an animated speech if his life depended on it. So is Romney better than Perry, because he is stiff all the time?
What makes you think the media would do that. This makes a good story. Well that and sex stories. If Newt would take the lead guess what the story would be...his three wives. But we have been there seen that. Who knows what they would come up with.
We are dealing with a superficial media.
Just think - if you were more polished, you might be able to get a job at MSNBC.
Well of course of the MSM wouldn’t do it, which I never suggested. I was just wondering if some of his supporters might not have footage they could post. If it is typical behavior, you’d think somebody would—maybe even somebody in his campaign. Post a youtube video, and say, ‘See; it’s just standard, happy, relaxed Rick Perry—and here are prior examples to prove it.’
I don’t know. I don’t think he’s drunk. I thought he was hilarious, down-to-earth and relaxed. Loved that dig at Tax-Cheat Little Timmy.
I guess I’m just tired of hearing of how badly someone speaks (GWB, Sarah Palin, now Rick Perry), simply because they don’t come off as some oily, slimy, two-faced Janus that reads from a teleprompter.
