Cain camp backs off Perry charge as new payout details emerge
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/03/2011 | James Oliphant

That was fast: As part of its seemingly ever-evolving media strategy, Herman Cain’s campaign appears to have pulled the plug on blaming Rick Perry for the swirl of accusations surrounding the candidate.

“We want to move on with the campaign. Let’s get over these things that don’t mean anything to the American public,” Mark Block, Cain's campaign manager, told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly on Thursday afternoon.

But that’s not about to become any easier. Politico reported Thursday that one of the women who accused Cain of sexual harassment during his time at the National Restaurant Assn. received a payout of $45,000 to settle the matter and keep quiet.

Previously, the New York Times reported that a second woman received a severance of $35,000—which for her was a year’s salary.

The Politico report would seem to again put Cain’s credibility at issue. He has said the woman’s complaint is one that he recalls, but has described it as “baseless” and first said she received a negligible “termination" settlement of perhaps two or three months' salary.

He later shifted his account, saying the amount could have been larger, perhaps six months’ salary.

Block appeared on Fox News on Wednesday evening and blistered the Perry campaign, accusing former Cain aide Curt Anderson, now in the Perry camp, of leaking details of the harassment allegations.

But Anderson, in a round of media interviews, denied knowing anything about the allegations and had nothing but good things to say about Cain.

“I didn't know anything about this. It's hard to leak something you don't know anything about, of course,” Anderson told CNN on Thursday.

Of course Perry didn’t try to shift it onto Romney, of course not.

Meanwhile another candidate's handlers let a good speech get morphed into a drunken sideshow.

Lots of stupid to go around this campaign season...

Could you remind me which Fortune 500 companies or industry trade groups that Miss O’Donnell headed up. My memory isn’t what it used to be.

I don't know if Perry was drunk or not. But that would be a good explanation for what was clearly some very unusual behavior.

Using moral equivalence to excuse Cain’s alleged behavior is unseemly. IF there are two women and each got a payout of between $35-45k from NRA, Cain is sunk.

Herman only worked for the NRA for THREE years for goodness sake. To have two complaints filed against you with those kinds of payouts in such a short time is very unusual to say the least. Trying to get people to believe they were frivilous and you can’t remember any details is ludicrous. If an attorney contacted NRA with a complaint (which they obviously did since on of the attorneys has already come forward), the NRA’s attorneys would have talked EXTENSIVELY with Herman about the allegations. They would not just cut a check for $45k without asking Cain if there was any substance to the allegations.

Cain said there were no skeletons in his closet. He was dishonest about that. He said the allegations had no substance. That is still to be determined. He said the payouts were a couple months severance. We are finding out that is not true either. If there is nothing to these allegations, he should be on the phone to the NRA demanding the documents be released for all to see.

Mark Block saying it is time to move on seems like a feeble attempt at damage control. I liked Herman, he had my vote. Now I am stuck with Perry or a fatally flawed Newt. Where is Paul Ryan when you need him?

Many moons have passed since my last comment on FR but I must comment on the problem of the Stalinist msm and bloggers attacking conservative political candidates. There must be a conservative with deep pockets out there, like the Marxist Soros, who can fund investigations into the backgrounds of msm personnel and leftist bloggers. We are at war with the leftist out to destroy this nation. Obama is a president about whose background we know little. What about his school records? Why do we know no one who went to school with him? Why are his records sealed? Someone needs to dig up dirt on msm “hit men” and find out what their hidden secrets are. Who are the queers, lesbians and communists amongst them. The lives of those people need to be destroyed in whatever way it takes. It is way past time to get down and dirty - no holds barred.

Before the Palinbots became Cainbots, Sarah called him
“Herb” on Greta’s show. Twice. And you know how if Sarah says anything she is always right and sticks to it, I just thought the Herb supporters would appreciate it if Herb was called by his right name. Sarah said. That’s all. Thanks for asking.

I was speaking to public perceptions of the event.

And this was the campaign that just retooled into a team of seasoned national campaign professionals...

Yesterday an Iowa radio guy named Deace complained about Cain’s behavior to some woman at his station.

Here are the details, as reported in the Des Moines Register:

During his Oct. 3 broadcast in Iowa, Deace mentioned that Cain made a comment to a woman who was there to report on the radio interview for another news agency.

“Cain said, ‘Darling, do you mind doctoring my tea for me?’” Deace said.

Deace told the Register last month that he believes Cain was talking about adding honey and lemon, but that it was an awkward moment.

LOL I missed that. Darn, I usually do know what’s going on. I had no idea I was a Cainbot tho. I’m always sorry that we have to have labels simply because we support one candidate or another. I do think having a President Herman will sound a little weird but not as weird as President Barak sounds, so I’ll get used to it. :)

"Been over to RealClearPolitics lately to look at the polls? Oh, and I understand that he’s raised about $2 million dollars since this “scandal” broke in Politico. Governors Romney and Perry might want to try and manufacture some kind of sex scandal about themselves. Just sayin’!

Oh, and Speaker Gingrich just passed Governor Perry in the polls."

Just wait: the press will have a field day with Gingrich's sexual activities!

I know. I was applying my first sentence to my second. There is no logical explanation for Perry's very strange behavior. His supporters say he was not drunk. Okay, then why was he acting the way he was? Was that normal behavior for Rick Perry. I've seen the man speak many times and he never acted like that. Was he playing to an audience that he perceived to be halfwits, childish or puerile? There is definitely more to this story.

I don't know what qualifies someone as a "seasoned national campaign professional" but if someone on Perry's staff advised him to act like that at a time when he is fighting to gain lost ground, they should be fired.
