A new report claims that Republican presidential contender Herman Cain voted for Democrat Bill Clinton for president in his first run, as well as for two Nebraska Democratic candidates in the past.
In a story on the Nebraska Watchdog website, Joe Jordan writes that Mr. Cain supported Mr.Clinton during his 1992 presidential bid, 17 months before he squared off with Mr. Clinton over his push to overhaul the national health care system.

Well, I voted for Mondale, you know the guy who stated at the Democrat convention that he would raise taxes? I didn’t actually see him make that statement when he made it but I say a clip of him saying that.
My excuse was I was young, voting for the first time in my life and because I’m black, I was supposed to vote for Democrats because Republicans hated black people.
What happened? I became a Christian, learned what the DemocRATS stood for and soon after, registered as a Republican and voted that way ever since.

I am well versed in the whole “Cain loves Romney” BS from the Perrybots, thanks.
He supported Gore in a primary. So his support did absolutely NOTHING to help a democrat out against a republican in an election. And his “support” appears to have been mostly lending his name as a low-level democratic politician; like those “honorary chair” positions candidates like to tout to help them get in-state donations.
I doubt Cain was instrumental in getting Clinton elected over Bush. Perot and his followers are mostly to blame for that one. And Bush. I don’t think either really matters — just glad to have Cain on our side now. But by any standard, supporting a democrat in a presidential election in the 1990s is “worse” than supporting a democrat in a presidential primary in the 1980s.
Also note that, for those who said Perry was way too old for a “come to your senses” argument, Cain was a lot older when he became a republican than Perry was.

The article says that campaign manager Gordon is the source of the information. And that Cain turned Republican by 1996.
That was the year he started lobbying for the National Restaurant Association.
It’s not what issues he discusses. It’s his “I could support Romney, but I could never support Perry” comments. And his “Romney would be a good choice for President”, and his “I’d love to be Romney’s VP”, and his campaign’s announcement that they were going to target conservatives and leave Romney alone, so they were the last conservatives standing and all the conservatives would have to support him or else.
Of course, I’m not sure Cain has really “attacked” Romney on anything other than Romneycare.
Thank you for that clarification. I’d like to see this from the campaign, not 3rd-hand. On the other hand, I don’t think it matters (other than it should shut up the people attacking Perry, where I also don’t think it matters).
I’m beginning to think that Cain’s problem is his staff.

I voted for Clinton too. Not going to judge the man for that, there was a time when the Democratic Party was not communist.
1989 vs sometimes between 1993 and 1996. And Cain is 66, Perry is 61. Looks like Perry, for all his faults, is a faster learner than Cain.

But that’s because Perry has been focused on one thing — sinking Romney.
I’m talking kill wounds - that’s how you do it in real hunting if you really have a target in your sights. Perry’s having help from Real Governors of Real States containing Real People who want to erase Obama, and he’s taking flack from his own ‘side’.
It is now, although oddly I was alive in 1994, and I don’t remember that being the reason for hillarycare going down in flames. It was the Harry & Loise commercial, produced by Health Insurance industry.
I know Wikipedia isn’t the best source in the world for anything political, but in a reasonable discussion about Hillarycare and it’s demise, it says this: “Opposition to the Clinton plan was initiated by William Kristol and his policy group Project for the Republican Future, which is widely credited with orchestrating the plan’s ultimate defeat through a series of now legendary “policy memos” faxed to Republican leaders.[17] “
It does mention Cain’s question as an important turning point as well: “One key turning point against the Clinton plan was a televised town hall meeting in April 1994. During the event, President Clinton was challenged by businessman Herman Cain on the resulting effects on small businesses.”
And it also mentions Harry and Louise: “The effort also included extensive advertising criticizing the plan, including the famous Harry and Louise ad paid for by the Health Insurance Association of America, which depicted a middle-class couple despairing over the plan’s complex, bureaucratic nature.”
I’ve taken the claims crediting Cain with ending Hillarycare as typical campaign rhetoric.

What is interesting in this if you read near the bottom was in the race that is cited, he is accused of making up quotes by Bruning’s (Senate Candidate) finance chairman David Sokol... Hmmm...

What you might not know is that just 17 months earlier Cain was on Clinton’s side. Ten days after he confronted the President, Cain told this reporter (at the time Cain was living in Omaha and I was reporting for KMTV the CBS affiliate in Omaha) that, while he was embarrassed to admit it, on Election Day, 1992 Cain had voted for the Clinton-Gore ticket.
And it’s not as if Cain had jumped on a Nebraskans for Clinton bandwagon. Most of the state opposed Clinton, who only managed to pick up 29 per cent of the vote (Bush 47-Clinton 29-Perot 24).
I voted for Perot, maybe I should be in prison. LOL
