NORTHEAST OF EDINBURG - An Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputy was shot Sunday afternoon during a traffic stop. It happened near the intersection of Val Verde Road and FM 2812 northeast of Edinburg.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino told CHANNEL 5 NEWS a deputy responded to a call about a alleged kidnapping in the area. En route the deputy spotted a truck matching the suspects' description. "They pulled him over. Another deputy drove up and helped him. We did what's called a felony stop (because) we knew that there were suspects involved in that vehicle," Trevino explained.

He said the deputies had the driver out of the vehicle. During questioning, a passenger bailed out of the vehicle and started shooting.

"Both of our deputies, even the one that was injured and laying on the ground, returned fire. We fatally shot one bad guy," said the sheriff. "We got a second one, who is not in very good condition, who was shot once in the head and several times in the torso."

Another suspect was shot in the hand. A fourth suspect wasn't injured in the shootout. Deputies detained him at the scene.

Trevino said the deputy was shot three times during the exchange - twice in the chest and once in the lower right abdomen. That deputy was taken to a McAllen hospital and is expected to recover. The sheriff refused to release his name but said his bullet-proof vest likely saved his life.

Trevino tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the alleged kidnapping was the result of a botched drug deal. His officers searched a mobile home in the area where the failed drug transaction likely happened.

I'd have to agree. Shot three times, ouch.

My prayer for the injured officer. Glad to see that one, maybe two, of the bad guys are permanently rehabilitated.

Good, they won't be taking up prison space or suing the officers.

Re: perp number 2 - he took one to the head and 3 to the torso - seems that the deputy gave it the old college try.

Looks like a kidnapping attempt...So they probably weren’t successful in that effort...Which is a good thing I suppose...

Then they got caught, shot, and a couple of toe tags attached...

I’d say that is a successful intervention...

“Ever find the person who had been kidnapped?”

Think he was in the truck too. He’s considered a witness and was taken in for questioning.

The Sheriff says it was a drug deal gone bad. A SWAT Team later executed two warrants in the area, confiscating drugs and arresting at least two people. More arrests are expected.
