Cain is expecting these smears. See what he said back in May. (Especially the last paragraph below):

MAY 15, 2011
Herman Cain sounds off on race, a debate win, and the need to simplify government
By:Byron York | 05/15/11 7:35 PM
http://washingtonexaminer.com/politics/2011/05/herman-cain-sounds-race-debate-win-and-need-simplify-government

[snip] .... “Here’s my theory,” said Cain, leaning forward in his chair. “Let’s talk about the current field of Republican candidates. They can’t go after Obama as hard as I can because they’re not black. I think that, either subconsciously or deliberately, they are being coached to not say it a certain way, that you’re going to be labeled a racist and the liberal media is going to try to bring you down, because they still want to protect their precious Obama.”

Cain believes his audiences are a different story. “The voters, they hear my message first, not ‘He could take it to Obama,’ because they are more concerned about stopping Obama than taking it to Obama,” he explained. “This is what I’m hearing and this is what I’m feeling. And the race card is going to be short-lived if Herman Cain gets the nomination.”

“They’re going to come after me more viciously than they would a white candidate,” Cain responded. “You’re right. Clarence Thomas. And so, to use Clarence Thomas as an example, I’m ready for the same high-tech lynching that he went through — for the good of this country.” Cain smiled broadly. “I’m ready for the same high-tech lynching.” .........” [snip]

Interesting how quickly Ann comes to deflect blame away from Romney and Rove for their hit on Cain.

> Mr. Cain made “physical gestures” that weren’t sexual in
> nature, but made the women uncomfortable.

Not sexual in nature?

Then what was it?

Was he eating with his mouth open?

Was he getting uppity?

that made “women” who experienced them or witnessed them uncomfortable...
Taken right from the Anita Hill playbook.

I thought Whoraldo’s conversation with the Cain spokesman was revealing. He kept trying to get him to confirm or deny that any money had ever been paid to these women (”hush money” was his characterization”), saying stuff like, “you know we like you here”, and “you're making a big mistake not answering”. Then as soon as he hung up, he said that if there was a settlement part of the agreement would be a requirement that nobody talk about it. So he knew Cain couldn't answer the question directly.

Sounds like it was a frivolous lawsuit that the restaurant association settled rather than waste money defending. And since the accusers are not on the record (at least yet), he can't really respond. If they were on the record, that would break the agreement and he could talk about it. I'm sure like Whoraldo the Politico people were well aware of that.

Whenever Team Romney had rumors they wanted to start about other candidates,
Jonathan Martin has been their go-to guy to get those rumors in writing in front of a national audience.

“And The Most Irresponsible Journalist Award Goes to The Politico’s Jonathan Martin!
So tell me, how do you write a “news” story about an organization paying for a speaker when you don’t even know if the organization is paying for the speaker?
Ask “journalist” Jonathan Martin. He knows all about it.
You see, Jonny wrote a piss poor story the other day about how the Iowa Family Policy Center will be paying a large speaker fee if Sarah Palin comes to Iowa to keynote the IFPC’s fall funderaiser.
The only problem is that Jonny has no sources confirming that any exorbitant fee is being charged or paid.
Jonny also got some inside info from David Kochel, who was a top aide to former (and future) presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.
Hey Dave, didn’t I just read a story about how Mitt Romney tried to buy off the Iowa Christian Alliance?
I heard you helped facilitate that little scheme. And somehow you are shocked at the thought of a well-known political figure (who very likely isn’t running for president) getting paid a speaker’s fee for (gasp) a public speaking appearance? ..
and then we’ve got Tim Albrecht quoted. He was the Iowa spokesman for Romney’s 2008 caucus campaign.”
And it always seemed like, whenever the Romney people had rumors they wanted to start about other candidates,
Jonny was their go-to guy to get those rumors in writing in front of a national audience.

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

Who benefits most from Sanford meltdown? Californian (that's right) Mitt Romney
