Cain: "Irresponsible" for Bush to set Iraq date (He was referring to Obama)
CBSnews.com - Face The Nation ^ | 10-30-11 | CBS - Face The Nation

(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Sunday it was "irresponsible" for former President George W. Bush to set a withdrawal date from Iraq, and that President Obama should have re-evaluated that date upon taking office. Cain, in an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation," said that a "responsible Commander in Chief" would have consulted military commanders on the ground and asked, "Should we continue with this or should we modify it?"

"Look, President Obama changed a lot of other things that Bush started, so I don't believe that he's doing it because it was in the Bush doctrine," he said, of Mr. Obama's recent announcement of a full Iraq withdrawal by the end of 2011.

CBS's reporting on this interview is pathetic. I listened to the whole interview. Cain said it was irresponsible for a Commander in Chief to give a date-certain for pulling out of Iraq. He was talking about Obama. Shieffer said, "But that was George Bush." So CBS reports it as Cain saying Bush was wrong, when in the interview, he was clearly talking about Obama.

Cain went on to say, "Look, President Obama changed a lot of other things that Bush started, so I don't believe that he's doing it because it was in the Bush doctrine," he said, of Mr. Obama's recent announcement of a full Iraq withdrawal by the end of 2011.

Shieffer also tried to argue with Cain about 9-9-9 vs. 9-0-9, saying Cain had CHANGED the plan. Shieffer wouldn't accept Cain's statement that 9-0-9 was always in the plan, but nobody had bothered to read it.

Shieffer also goes on and on about the smoking commercial, saying it implies that smoking is cool, asking Cain to take the ad down, and to tell people not to smoke. I can't wait for the day when Cain reminds everyone that Obama smokes, AND that smoking is LEGAL. So Bob, if you think that tiny video (and Bob, it wasn't an AD!!) of some obscure guy named Mark Block tells young people that smoking is cool, what do you think Obama smoking tells young people??? Obama is the President of the United States, a position that many young people admire and aspire to, and HE SMOKES. So Bob, the last time you interviewed Obama, did you ask him to stop smoking and to tell young people not to smoke??

It's really sad that these media people have so much power over voters. Really sad.

By the way, you can watch the interview here:

“former President George W. Bush set a withdrawal date from Iraq,”

Factually true. He signed the SOF agreement with the Iraqis which mandates our leaving Iraq by the end of the year. Deal with it Bush bot.

Obama could negotiate a new contract with the Iraqis but not throw the old one in the basket. Bottom line...Obama screwed up on any long term agreement and all he had was Bush’s agreement which the arrogant bas**** touted as his own.

I don’t have any problem saying that Bush was irresponsible. If he had behaved like a conservative, we would not now be suffering thru a recession and Obama.

I didn’t see Face the Nation this AM. There was a football game on that channel where I live. But I’ve certainly heard about how B.S. went to war with Mr. Cain from my out of state friends! Both shows have stirred up a hornet’s nest out here.! I am sorry if Mr. Cain apologized to that hack for his smoking ad! The more I see it, the funnier it is! The media on both shows plugged in their own toasters this morning!

Close enough for me. I certainly don’t hear the other candidates ready to take on Obama (and Bush for that matter), in this mess.

Hey Kantian, thanks for the name-calling. I appreciate your adult behavior. Isn't keyboard courage great!? :-)

But for the record, you both missed my point. My point was not that Bush set the date, or that Cain agreed that Bush was just as wrong to have set the date. My point was that Cain was specifically referring to the recent announcement by Obama of the date-certain that the US would be out of Iraq. Cain said it was irresponsible for a Commander in Chief to do that. Shieffer pressed him to say that it was Bush who set that date. Then the title of the article was that Cain had said Bush was irresponsible.

In other words, Cain said A. Shieffer said B. Cain agreed with B, even though that's not what he was talking about. The story becomes B.

I was merely commenting that CBS was doing bait-and-switch, and poor reporting for sensationalism.

And Brilliant, I don't have any problem with stating that Bush was just as wrong on this issue. And I agree with you that spending has been out of control for decades.

The media will always play games. Let them do it... and then call them on it.

You can watch the Face The Nation interview here. It’s about 15 minutes long:

I believe the day they signed the status of forces agreement is the day the reporter threw the shoe at Dubya - so the news was all about the shoe (ha ha) and nothing about the substance of the big meeting.

Cain is really good at stopping them in their tracks when they ask two questions in one, and he separates it into the two separate issues.

What he is not good at is identifying when they have walked him into a corner. And he's not good at turning it around on Obama. He spends too much time defending himself and not enough time on the offense towards Obama.

This smoking thing is a perfect example. Everything Cain says is correct (we're not saying smoking is cool, Mark Block is a smoker, let people be people, etc.), but it's also a perfect opportunity to go on the offensive and calmly say, “I agree with you, that smoking is dangerous and as role models, we do have to be very careful about what message we send to our young children. That's why I wish President Obama would have quit smoking a long time ago, and along with Michelle's campaign to get America to eat healthier, the two of them could have started a campaign to prevent young people from starting smoking. I wonder why the President hasn't done that, don't you?”

Everybody is so ready to call names here in FR these days... comes from the breakup into various pro-this-candidate, pro-that-candidate camps, I guess.

The attack on you was stupid and your come-back was one of the best I’ve read in years.

Well-done. Bravo.

“Isn’t keyboard courage great!?”

You bots are one to talk. I lost count of the number of times you bots threatened me and my family’s life all because I had the temerity to write that perhaps Medicare Part D - aka free pills for granny - was a disgusting waste of taxpayer dollars or that Dubya’s signing of the Campaign Finance Reform was unconstitutional or that hooking up with Ted Kennedy to write an education bill was a disgrace.

So let's see...

I posted an article, in which I wasn't defending or attacking Bush.

You immediately posted and called me a Bush bot, even though my posting of the article had absolutely nothing to do with you.

I called you out on name-calling.

You cite a past history with OTHER PEOPLE, not me, of having called you names etc., as justification for calling me names.

Mighty Christian of you, Brother.

And last time I checked, no one is forcing you to stay on this website. It's a free world — why don't you leave if it upsets you so much?

And by the way, it's a really Liberal trait to lump everyone in the same pot, when I've never posted to you in my life before today. Maybe look into getting a book on paranoia, or anger management, or perhaps on behaving like an adult, or maybe on being a good Christian. Just sayin.

This is the primary Cain theme in the MSM:

Falsely report that Cain said something contradictory or incorrect, or that he is flip-flopping his position.
