Turnaround or the End of the Road for Rick Perry?
The Washington Post ^ | 10/30/11 09:00 | Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 10/30/2011 3:48:03 PM PDT by drewh

The past seven days were supposed to be Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s comeback week. He had an economic plan, a big address, a new staff and a new Iowa TV campaign. And yet, the week turned into a mini-disaster, typical of the error-plagued Perry campaign.

Instead of spending the week talking about that proposal, however, Perry found himself repeatedly driving around the rhetorical cul-de-sac that is the debate over whether President Obama is a U.S. citizen. . . . Rick Perry, for using your cowboy boots to step all over your campaign’s preferred message, you had the worst week in Washington.”

The staff shake-up itself impinged on th speech rollout, getting the media to push out a number of “process” stories. Then came the birther mess, which engulfed the campaign for several days. Meanwhile, Perry sounded like a disgruntled loser when his campaign let it be known he might skip out on some debates.

Todd Harris, a Republican consultant not working for any presidential campaign, told me, “It seems like whatever week we’re in, it’s always the FOLLOWING week when Perry’s going to turn things around. The problem of course is that they’re running out of weeks.”

The sense that Perry was never ready for the presidential race seems to be pervasive. And then Perry, ever the stubborn Texan, refused to call his birther comments a mistake. Joe Allbaugh, his new campaign chief, may start wishing he had chosen another campaign to pave his return from political oblivion.

At the Cornerstone Action Dinner Friday night he touted his new economic plan. His delivery was strangely mannered and giddy, as if trying to compensate for his sleepy demeanor in recent debates. Plainly, he is struggling to address his likability problem and hasn’t quite found the right tone.

Perry is a brave man, loyal to his ideas (in-state-tuition), and honest to the voters.

Why brave? Very few politicions have the courage to follow the Walter Mondale model.

Is this a WaPo editorial page article, or a gossip column? There’s this weird catty undertone that is more suited to a glamor magazine than a major American newspaper.

She's supposed to be a conservative writer but has penned over 60 Perry columns. That said I wonder if we're not being set up for Jeb Bush?

Not really a Perry guy, but he did well on Fox News Sunday today from what I saw of it.

It’s so nice to see that the commie libs are so worried about Rick Perry’s future. I wish I could repay them by worrying about their boy’s future but I don’t do that.

Perry wasted too much of his fire on Romney when he ought to have been focused on O.

The Romniacs, for their part, have always made the same mistake, going after fellow Repubs like Palin instead of focusing their attacks on the guy in the White House.

For Perry, this is beginning to look like a re-run of his campaign for governor. He refused to debate Bill White throughout, and periodically issued bland policy pronouncements from time to time. I am beginning to see why. The cut and thrust of live debate is not his metier. Speeches are not his thing. My guess is that if he wants to become president, he will have to stick to his time-tested template - focusing on his strengths (organizing political operatives, fundraising and deciding on growth-oriented economic policies) and avoiding his weaknesses (public-speaking, press conferences and debates). Can he win while being scourged by the press for avoiding any direct exposure to the public eye? We’ll get to find out if he wins the GOP nomination.

I agree. Conservatives need to have someone besides Romney win the nomination.

Since Palin has dropped out it appears Cain and Perry with Newt as the VP would be a strong possibility. I could support either, but with his interview today Perry is getting a second wind.

I am not a Perry fan and prefer at least three other candidate, That said, Rubin is a big-time neocon (like Bill Krystal) who is pushing hard for mitt Romney.

She's working for WaPo. If her WaPo columns were just a hobby, that's one thing. If she's relying on it to pay the rent, she'll toe the line like everyone else. And that's assuming that her "conservatism" wasn't just a function of who she hung out with. It's possible that she's "grown" (liberal) in her job, now that her colleagues are 100% liberal.

Having Kay Bailey Hutchison, Kinky Freidman, Bill White, and Debra Medina as your only opponents is the very heart of Perry's strengths. And alas for poor Rick, that scenario is already off the table.

Perry can not get the weak field he has always needed to win.

“I could support either, but with his interview today Perry is getting a second wind.”

Dream on.

We’ve been hearing for 3 weeks now how Cain is going to collapse and how Perry is coming back strong (flat tax, etc.). Too bad the polls don’t show any of it.

As it is, should Cain drop, then Newt is next anyway. People know as much about Perry as they need to. He’s been GOVERNOR OF TEXAS for a decade and he still can’t figure out which side of the coddle-illegals argument to be on, if he wants to run as a conservative.

This Jennifer Rubin is another one of the crackpots who write for the Washington Compost.

I can't believe that candidates are being suggested as through even though there hasn't been one primary election yet and none is scheduled for several months. Are we gonna let the Press decide who the Republican nominee is or are we gonna have primary elections decide?

I'm gonna scream is I hear of any polls forcing out any of the candidates before we have had a good number of primaries. There are very good reasons to let this drag out for 6-7 more months. I'm not in any hurry to have this end. What the hell is the rush?

Especially if that video of the Cornerstone dinner speech goes viral, maybe Rick was tired that night but it looks like amateur hour.
