Texas Gov. Rick Perry is sliding in the polls but he is not budging concerning his stance on college tuition for illegal immigrants in his state, according to New Hampshire's Union Leader.

In an interview with the newspaper yesterday, Perry, who has come under attack from Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney for his position on the issue, defended the policy in Texas which permits some illegal immigrants to pay in-state college and university tuition.

"We could kick these people to the curb and pick up their cost of being in our state through other sources, social programs up to and including incarceration because they are unskilled workers and what might occur with that scenario," he told the paper in explaining choices his state could have taken.

"Do we want to create tax wasters or do we want to create taxpayers," Perry said in talking about the tuition program which is available to students who have graduated high school and been in Texas for three years.

I'm not a lawyer, and don't know the details of the charges they could be brought up on, but I do know they could be charged with serious crimes.

I honestly would support the death penalty for this crime, because I think it's that serious. Of course I wouldn't support it now because we would be executing most of our government. I would like our borders closed, and illegals deported before anything else. Then for an investigation seeing everything that was going on with the enablers. I wouldn't want the death penalty against them unless they were found to be more involved with the Mexican government in actual people smuggling or something. I would be fine letting them off, and supporting new laws with harsh punishment that could be brought against politicians doing this kind of stuff gain. I wouldn't support harsh punishment, if any at all, if we had finally stopped the problem on the border, and deported every illegal we pick up here. We don't have to deport them all in a short period of time making a spectacle out of it. We could speed it up, and get them out overtime if we actually stopped them from coming back. I would support huge fines against businesses that hire illegals that increase significantly each time they are caught, without a limit to how big the fines could become, or how many times they could be used. It would finally bankrupt any business that refused to obey the law. I have a feeling they could easily get American workers before they went bankrupt. And Sanctuary city governments would be warned to take certain actions by a certain date, and if they didn't comply they should be made examples of with huge prison sentences for city leaders involved.

We need to close off our border first. Then remove the illegal immigrants. Then have the military on the border with a lot of firepower and good RoE, to deal with the military style drug cartels who probably won't like losing a costumer when we seal the border. Anyone who's armed that crosses our borders should be engaged. If they attack we should pursue them into Mexico if needed. If the Mexican military crosses our border they should engaged. They have crossed several times to either test us, or just be arrogant.

If their government tried anything they would back down once they saw we were serious. The drug cartels may continue to attack, and if that was the case we could take out their leaders like with special operation units, and hellfire missiles from unmanned drones just like Pakistan. Mexico doesn't control the areas held by drug cartels, and couldn't do anything more than use words against us because they know what would happen trying to fight us. Maybe take their oil by force to pay for what they have done to our nation.

Nothing about that is radical. I didn't say send the military to the border and start killing everything in site. We stay on our side, and only respond if attacked, but I think we would be at least a few times just as a test. I support a large border wall with the military on the border as well, at least until we could train a very large border guard trained and equipped to handle attacks from drug cartel units made up of military trained thugs. While only going into Mexico in pursuit of an enemy, or to stop attacks coming from their side. If the Mexican government attacks target their capital, and hit their homes to let them know they can't do anything they please. We are are in an unconventional war with Mexico now, and we're losing. I am ranting too much today, and feel to bad to check my rant for mistakes, so I'm just posting it lol.

If he had any common sense, he would never have supported it in the first place.

If he had any common sense, he wouldn’t be defending it.

I think we can safely say he lacks common sense.

“Then why do you never show up on the Cain threads? Who do you support?”

I do sometimes, but not really needed. Cain’s doing fine without my help.

Go talk to BobL also from Texas and tell him your side. Frankly, all public universities taking all comers in Texas sounds incorrect. It implies the 1st rate schools aren’t really 1st rate at all. Which I simply do not believe. For example, enrollments at Georgia Tech and UGA here in Georgia are limited. Go check you facts for real this time.

It may be a Texas issue, but when the Texas issue wants to be President, he can make it a US issue. And Perry has failed miserably in assuring those of us that he won’t stick his Texas issue on the rest of us.

In fact, he called us “heartless” and his campaign cratered ever since. Those are the facts.

That’s because Perry is against E-Verify.

"Do we want to create tax wasters or do we want to create taxpayers," Perry said

I want them the hell out of my country. I want their lives to made as miserable as possible until they leave. I want them literally to live in constant fear.

But, instead, they openly protest in the streets and nothing is done, they are given free education at taxpayer expense and jobs at US workers expense and if we complain, we are called racist or "heartless".

Ah, but Ricky baby, that's the beauty of a Flat or 999 tax.

Um...no. What the universities actually do is hold out a certain % for "special cases" students. The illegals will fall into that category. They will be taking the place of other students, here legally.

Can you cite me a student who had the grades to get in but was denied admission into a Texas school due to this bill?

Yes, in my corner of Texas (far from the border), my good friend and neighbor saw his 2-year-old nephew and sister-in-law both killed by a drunk illegal earlier this year. He has a framed photo of them in his den, which I see every time I visit. A few blocks away from me, is the spot where a high-school kid was run down by two illegals fleeing from a convenience store they just robbed. A mile further, a mother and daughter coming back from church were run over by yet another drunk illegal.

Bears repeating that in addition to the tens of BILLIONS of dollars pissed away on illegals each year, there is a greater human cost and we pay it daily in cities and towns all over the US.

Thanks, I’ll give you a few comments on your Perry postmortem here.

“Most of Perry’s problems could have been avoided. He was mistakenly convinced by this staff that the illegals were not a big defining issue in the primary and that pandering to the Hispanic voters would better serve him in the general election.”

I don’t agree that he’s pandering to Hispanics. Rather, like Bush-43, he simply identifies and loves them. That’s why he can’t, even now, shake off this issue. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with Hispanics (or any other immigrant group - like most smart conservatives, I found my wife halfway around the world), but when liking Hispanics morphs into coddling Illegals, that doesn’t go over well with the Republican base. As to a general election strategy - you might be right there, but it’s usually smarter to lockup your party’s nomination prior to attacking what they stand for (i.e., secure borders).

“From reading the tea leaves in the press, Perry’s biggest mistake in the beginning was only using his local Tex-Mex staff and not hiring outside experienced national campaign staffers.”

Agree - good point - he is so isolated with his bunch here in Texas that he has NO CLUE that there are some HUGE immigration problems (both legal and illegal) in many, if not most, of the other states. In other words, this stuff will not blow over.

“His mistakes continue including the most recent Confederate license-plate issue. He simply should have said this is a “states issue” and been done with it. Perry is not being properly briefed nor prepared on the issues at the national level.

Agree - that $15M he has doesn’t seem to be hiring him very good help these days...LOL.

“I believe the only way for a Perry come back now with be if Cain falls big time. There are five years of radio archives tape on Cain and some of it will not be pretty. If the others in the GOP field don’t bring down Cain, I would expect the establishment GOP will try to bring Cain down prior to the SC/FL primary.”

Even if Cain falls, people are not going back to Perry. They will first go to Newt...then maybe back to Michelle. But Perry has blown it, and continues to try to dig a deeper and deeper hole for himself. He’s way beyond the point of redemption.

In hindsight...here’s what he should have done (i.e., if he put his money to decent use).

1) Disown his Illegal-coddling past. All he would have had to say was that it was a MISTAKE to support the Texas Dream Act (and he still cannot say that). Likewise with his Islamic buddy and other anti-American positions.

2) Call up the Texas Legislature into Special Session to pass the bill outlawing Sanctuary Cities, and also require E-Verify...at a minimum. If he really wanted to get serious, pass the Alabama (or Arizona) laws.

3) Say no debates, from DAY ONE. Not after people realize that you look like an IDIOT trying to debate people much more experienced and knowledgeable about national issues. That’s how he handled it in Texas (very few debates)...and he’s been our potentate for a decade now. It’s hard to believe that his $15M handlers couldn’t quickly figure out that he’s absolutely CLUELESS regarding national and international issues.

4) Figure out what other areas you’re weak in and try to address them, rather than defending them.

Pretty obvious stuff now...but way too late for recovery. If he tries any of the above, people will (rightly) call him a flip-flopper or a coward.

This is the best post on the topic on this site. Thanks for sharing. I just can’t wrap my brain around the vitriolic nastiness towards these young kids who are the kind of immigrants we need, you know those have the aptitude for learning and becoming productive tax payers.

An ILLEGAL, by definition, cannot be a resident. What part of illegal is lost on you people? They may live in Texas, but they are NOT residents anymore than a burglar is a resident of my home while I am away.

Of course not, Ricardo. Instead why don’t you kick the taxpayer to the curb by supporting magnets for illegals rather than punishment? You don’t want to pay to incarcerate them so you pay to school them? I wonder which policy will attract more invaders?

"The issue is ILLEGALS receiving reduced tuition which is a taxpayer subsidy."

Here, let me try. The school receives taxpayer funds via subsidy and grants. All attendees to that institution reap the benefit of that tax money. If these subsidies were solely from Texas tax sources, I'd be happy to defer the issue to the good people of Texas. However, that is not the case.
