Charlotte Observer is reporting that Apple has begun work building a 174 acre solar farm to power their new Maiden, North Carolina data center. The data center, located in Catawba County, was revealed by Steve Jobs during the iOS 5 keynote at WWDC this year, and will be partly responsible for powering iCloud. It was revealed earlier this year that Apple was purchasing land around the data center. Now we know why.
Permits issued by Catawba County show that the Cupertino, Calif., company has been approved to reshape the slope of some of the 171 acres of vacant land it owns on Startown Road, opposite the data center, in preparation of building a solar farm.

Right on.
Buy American.
The environmentalists will try to block this with web-based “grass roots” agitation, using their I-pads and I-phones. This will delay Apple’s purchase of solar panels from China.
Hmm. I suspect they will have to hide he real power source for the data farm. Even 170 acres of solar cells won’t do the job when it’s dark. Or raining. Or cloudy.
Hahahhahaaaaa!!!!!
what the aich is a solar farm, sounds like some goofy Apple thing
“Hmm. I suspect they will have to hide he real power source for the data farm. Even 170 acres of solar cells wont do the job when its dark. Or raining. Or cloudy.”
So, if it works even 50% of the time, they’ve saved on electricity (less their solar costs).
It’s private capital. I am going to assume they’ve run the numbers. No way this is a PR move.

A nuclear power plant would produce much more power and use up much less precious land.
You’re assuming it’s private capital. I’m doubting it. Remember who is in the White House.
It is only viable with heavy gubment subsidies.
Just google “Solar farms” and look at Images
Apple would put Bill Gates’ portrait on all of their products before they dabbled in nuclear power.
For proper installation you have to do a “cloud analysis” to properly locate the panels. Using more inverters will help the efficiency.
Some states allows people/businesses to sell back power. It would be good move to reduce cost during peak demand.
As long as they do it on their own dime, I have no issue with it.
” I am going to assume theyve run the numbers. No way this is a PR move.”
PLease. It is a total PR move. Solar takes several decades to pay off, if it ever does. It makes no business sense whatsoever.
Considering the Apple ties to the democrat socialist party, I would not be surprised if some digging revealed a large green jobs/green energy based infusion of taxpayer dollars into this project.
PING!
Not true. With the ability in some areas to sell back power, it can work if you do the numbers right.
yeah it’s ONLY a PR move. Wonder how big a federal loan thye got
Deforestation.
What about our animals and our Faw-rests??????????????
Apple hates forests and animals.
