A Hawaii couple

I agree, LibWhacker. I have always paid once I opened a Seltzer or something similar. If a package is open, you have to pay for it. However, if someone samples something as small as a grape.. what do they owe? I personally believe that the manager in this case could have handled this situation better. The article doesn’t state that this woman has a record of shoplifting. Now.. someone could say, “Mom, if you know you are having cough attacks then bring a bottle of water or drink with you”. How in the world would the store know that I already have a purchased bottle of water when I enter the store? I am fully aware that I am on a security camera and I don’t hide the fact that I open the drink and consume it.
Thank you for the summarized list of excuses. I’m off to the grocery store to grab a sandwich.
There's a reason the old time stores accepted all deliveries in the front, then put them on shelves behind the clerk or proprietor for his sole control.
Modern sales methods are based on probabilities of lower costs, higher profits, and losses (both mistakes and thefts).
You elect to use modern methods or old fashioned methods.
When you do that you accept the risk of loss as well as higher costs and lower profits.
.......with all due respect rawhide, I have a little different take. I think the store manager was likely just following “policy” from execs on high which means one or more or all of them should be fired.
The problem these execs don’t get and that is illustrated by this incident is that when “government” gets involved in a situation it is like brushing your teeth with a wire brush.......it is always, always OVER-KILL !!!
Dumbass cop mentality took over and BOTH parents went to jail leaving the baby with CPS. Dumb! If arrests just had to happen, they should not have arrested both parents so that one of them could have taken the baby over-night. The obvious fact that the woman was pregnant should have exempted her from jail for christ’s sake. Like I said, if you want to understand what happened here, go brush your teeth with a wire brush!
A couple of times, I have picked up a small bottle of water while grocery shopping and put the empty bottle through with my purchases.
I've never had anyone complain about that.
I hope the store manager gets his/her photo in the Hawaii newspapers showing their being awarded a nice bonus check for a job well done! Dollars to dog biscuits this couple are nothing more or less than freeloading leeches. And doing it in HAWAII yet! That REALLY torques me! The least they could have done was to come to the Mainland and freeze their tushes on Wall St.
Sometimes I’ll sample something from a package, etc. and I always put the wrapper, box, bottle, or price tag in the cart. They should have done likewise.
Yes... they should have. That being said, they shouldn’t have lost their daughter over it either. I guess this is a difficult case all around.
I have seen that and it makes me want to throw up
Bull. The stores have the food and the cups with pop there so you will buy it and eat it while you shop.
I’m trying to figure out if they offered payment when the mistake was apparent?
Why couldn’t they pay instead of going through all this or did the manager refuse the money?
They had just paid for groceries, so it doen’t seem like they were trying to steal?
sheesh I have forgotten things in my cart, get outside, realize it and go back in to pay. It happens, Ms perfect, maybe not to you.
“I’ve never had anyone complain about that”.
Actually, at our Safeway, the store manager actually suggested taking a bottle of water or other drink in the store. She did say to put it on the conveyer belt on the way out but she didn’t mind at all.
Yeah they offered to pay but the store “manager” had to make a federal case out of it
It's a matter of perspective then...If a store sells me a bag of good looking, sour grapes, they are stealing from me...If the grapes were consistently sweet, I wouldn't have a need to sample them before I buy them...
If you get grapes that are sour, you can return them to the store and get your money back. Eating anything that you didn’t pay for is stealing.
I was wondering... while the couple was putting their groceries on the conveyer belt if the manager had approached them and asked, “Did you eat an item during your shopping trip?”... that could have shown their true intent. If they said, “Oh my goodness, yes we did. We had two sandwiches” then they forgot. If they said, “Nope, not us”.. then they were lying. One simple sentence/question from the manager could have prevented such a controversy. IMHO.
Cans fall, plastic wrap rips, sneezes happen, bottles break ~ that's part of the cost of doing business.
You start demanding only perfect customers who never drop stuff, or bump against your shelves, you will have an empty store.
There's a whole science behind this ~
There are also thieves ~
