Darcy Richardson for President
Battleground Blog ^ | October 26, 2011 | Darcy Richardson

More information on the man who would dethrone Obama in the New Hampshire 2012 primary. The registration deadline ended today, and the field includes 14 candidates on the Democrat side alone.

Darcy Richardson wrote a book about the McCarthy campaign which ousted LBJ in 1968, so he's done his homework. Old timers may recall that the Dump-Johnson movement didn't happen by itself, but was an intra-party insurgent movement started in 1967 by attorney Allard K. Lowenstein.

With the media consensus trying to force-feed the GOP into accepting Mitt Romney as an opponent to Obama, it's worth looking at other avenues to change the existing regime. Could Darcy Richardson be the "Operation Chaos" candidate for 2012?

"While it was my fervent hope that a candidate of national stature and credibility would challenge President Obama in the 2012 Democratic primaries, I have entered my name in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary to offer my fellow disillusioned Democrats a choice."

"The growing sense of political hopelessness, frustration and alienation symbolized in the fledgling Occupy Wall Street movement represents a much larger national trend."

"I hope that my candidacy, as limited as it may turn out to be, might in some small measure restore a belief in American politics and American government, reinforcing the notion that real change can be achieved at the ballot box...."

"...I simply didn’t anticipate the kind of paralysis that seems to have immobilized the party’s progressives when it comes to challenging a sitting President of their own party."

"Sadly, there’s no Gene McCarthy on the horizon."

More from his blog:

"...The President’s $787 billion stimulus package in 2009 — much of which was used by Republican governors and GOP-controlled legislatures to balance state budgets — did little for the private sector and was simply too meager to pull the country out of the depths of the “Great Recession,” a devastating economic downturn that millions of Americans believe never ended."

"The President’s paltry and late-in-the-game $447 billion son-of-stimulus — if approved — will have the same minimal effect. However, it’s proving to be a powerful campaign weapon for a President desperately trying to reclaim his dispirited base. A cynic might say that’s its real purpose."

"As should be clear to everybody, the President is now in full campaign mode. Progressives shouldn’t be fooled again."

"The Democratic Party needs a bold and decisive leader, somebody who will fight for poor, working and middle-class Americans — those who have been mercilessly pummeled throughout this seemingly never-ending economic crisis."

"More than 25.8 million Americans are out of work or only marginally employed, and millions have tragically lost their homes. Small businesses, the backbone of the U.S. economy, are struggling while cash-rich major corporations amass record profits and park hordes of cash overseas."

"The American people are hurting, and they’re hurting badly."

"Working together, let’s send our President a message he can‘t ignore."

Although this varies from the FR perspective, should it be recognized that Darcy Richardson is at least one Democrat who is standing up to his own party's failed administration. Does he have the right idea here?

That primary campaign, 1967-68, was also the one on the Republican side where Mitt Romney's father was considered the shoe-in nominee early but screwed the pooch when he made an ill considered choice of words about being "brainwashed" during a fact finding tour of Vietnam. Never recovered from one taken out of context gaffe and Nixon went on to win it.

I suspect one of the driving forces behind Romney Jr.'s never ending quest is redeeming the "family name". NOT a good thing, IMHO, and that eagerness may be one of the things that make people instinctively cold in reaction to him. When I look at the guy and listen to him I know there's just something wrong.

I can't imagine having any enthusiasm in supporting Romney, even if that's what has to be done to dump Obama.

None of the others work for me either. Cain speaks well, but his tendency to make proclamations (that he hasn't fully thought through, like 9-9-9) and his lack of experience in office concern me. Perry has a bit of Al Gore in him, maybe as a residue from working for him years ago. No one in the room thinks Gingrich will do anything aside from selling a few more books.

So is an intra-party challenge what's needed here?

Darcy Richardson is at least standing up for his convictions.

And "Operation Chaos" did achieve some of what it set out to do, back in the primaries of 2008.

Sharpening Richardson's message, here's what I come up with:

"The growing sense of political hopelessness, frustration and alienation represents a much larger national trend."

"I simply didn’t anticipate the kind of paralysis that seems to have immobilized the party’s progressives when it comes to challenging a sitting President of their own party."

"President Obama needlessly squandered his first two years in office, saddling the nation with health care legislation that nobody really wanted...While pushing for legislation...the President virtually ignored the country’s mounting jobs crisis — until he started running for re-election, that is."

"The President’s $787 billion stimulus package in 2009 ... did little for the private sector and...the President’s paltry and late-in-the-game $447 billion son-of-stimulus — if approved — will have the same minimal effect. However, it’s proving to be a powerful campaign weapon for a President desperately trying to reclaim his dispirited base. A cynic might say that’s its real purpose. As should be clear to everybody, the President is now in full campaign mode."

"More than 25.8 million Americans are out of work or only marginally employed, and millions have tragically lost their homes. Small businesses, the backbone of the U.S. economy, are struggling...The American people are hurting, and they’re hurting badly."

"Working together, let’s send our President a message he can‘t ignore."
