(Reuters) - Presidential hopeful Herman Cain's quirky "smoking ad" may have mystified many Americans, but according to a new Reuters/Ipsos online poll, it has drawn a sharp line between Republicans who identify with the Tea Party and those who don't.

The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason, created enormous Internet buzz this week.

Six in 10 of those who strongly identify with the conservative Tea Party movement said they loved or liked the ad.

An almost equal percentage of people who self-identified as mainstream Republicans either disliked or hated it.

Yeah, I bet you like Romney. At least that is Cain’s VP choice.

Every Candidate's platform includes an energy plan focused on making the USA independent on foreign resources, reigning in the EPA, exploring and mining, drilling and tapping our energy resources.

Perry's Economic Plan is Steve Forbes plan with an “Opt Out”.

And Perry is now saying he won't debate! What would conservatives say if Obama said, “OK, I won't debate”. I got other venues that I can be elected through.

I just don't think Perry is POTUS material.....maybe Mrs. P could run in his place.

I've seen Perry several times outside the debate environment and he is one of most uninspirational candidates I have ever seen.

I'd say Perry's plan should be stay in Texas, keep your constituents that “love” you happy, keep the illegals happy and welcome more into your colleges, work force and welfare programs.

FWIW, the ban has killed scores of legitimate businesses and is, in fact, a grotesque seizure of private liberty by the MN left and their socialist-lite opposites in the pubbie Party.

Not just MN, everywhere it has been implemented.

I met a couple from SC last week and they were looking for somewhere to eat that was truly local and I was giving them some recommendations for which places had the best local seafood I also mentioned which of the places permitted smoking, as the husband was smoking a cigarette. they were shocked that it is still allowed in most establishments in this part of VA. They are so used to not being able to do it anywhere.

I noticed that nearly all the replays on TV, on any channel, omitted the smile bit.

I’ve smoked for the past 30 years and when I first saw the ad, I took it as being a bit weird - but so what? Until I saw THAT smile. My thought then was, “Damn, what a psycho!”

Ok. Now you’re getting gross. I don’t mind debating and calling out things I have read on candidates, but this stuff is gross. Sorry, Repeal from Georgia. Not going there with you.

Perry is smart saying he wont debate as there are 22 scheduled debates!! Gees. I hope his CM told him to hold back.

Perry did not get his energy plan from Forbes, he got it from managing his State of Texas for 12 years. He HATES the EPA. So do I. Abolish it. Don’t restructure like Cain wants to. Get rid of those ridiculous costly programs.

Of course, Perry consulted Forbes for his economic flat tax plan, I would too, the man is smart!

Yep! I smoked for about 20 years and it took me the better part of a year to quit; chewing Nicorette only made my habit worse when I started smoking again. Nowadays, I don’t use tobacco at all in any form. HOWEVER, I do not think any kind of intervention on the part of the state in any adult individual’s life on the issue of smoking is pure totalitarianism. Herman’s people keyed in on that and gave a lot of the nannies a nice fat lip.

Oops! Should read: “HOWEVER, I think any kind of intervention on the part of the state in any adult individual’s life on the issue of smoking is pure totalitarianism.”

Totally disagree with you.

This is pure genius. It wasn’t meant as an ad and look at all the free publicity he is getting. People are hearing about it and reading about and so going looking for it to see what all the hullabaloo is about it. Shear genius.

The message is getting out because it is being repeated over and over again because the minuscule bit with the cigarette comes at the very end - so the message is being heard by curious people.

At the end of the day smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait.

Advocating the use of government guns to prevent smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait.

I had that photo up on my wall for quite a long time. Until I read where he was speaking up against Bush and against the war after he got home. It came down. Too bad - it’s a great photo.

Then Cain smiles like he is promoting smoking. I think that is the WRONG message.

Yes, he is sending a message that personal freedom is a good thing. That is wrong to you and others on this forum, but is globally a good thing.

Really

31% of liberals smoke. 20% of conservatives . It's a liberal trait.

Unfortunately, Cain used a bad nasty issue for a good message.

You want a bad nasty issue?

Americans could smoke anywhere they wanted to do so during the last economic depression. During this one, they can't.

This issue will probably wind up being one of the things smokeless powder was created to solve.

Look at the footnote on your chart, statist.

Most conservatives I know would not even respond to such a question.

Perry is an intellectual lightweight. His grand energy plan is exactly what Sarah Palin has been talking about for over a year. His tax plan was put out only after seeing what the public liked about his competitors plans.

I can easily see him being dragged around Austin by his wife and big money donors. He needs to stay in Texas, operating under a system he can't screw up.
