(Reuters) - Presidential hopeful Herman Cain's quirky "smoking ad" may have mystified many Americans, but according to a new Reuters/Ipsos online poll, it has drawn a sharp line between Republicans who identify with the Tea Party and those who don't.
The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason, created enormous Internet buzz this week.
Six in 10 of those who strongly identify with the conservative Tea Party movement said they loved or liked the ad.
An almost equal percentage of people who self-identified as mainstream Republicans either disliked or hated it.

Oh bull! I smoke and I am as hard core Conservative as you will find anywhere in the country. You don’t have to smoke, but no one has the right to tell me I can’t if I CHOOSE to.
And that wasn’t what this ad was about anyway. It’s Mark Block and he smokes. SO WHAT!
It’s a liberty thang. Herman grinned because he stuck his finger into the eye of liberty quashing quasi-moralists - most of whom reside on the left (but certainly not all). If smoking is such a terrible thing that it should be stamped out with gub’mint power, then those who favor such know nothing of freedom.
Considering it is liberals attacking the rights of businesses to freely permit or prohibit a legal activity, I would have to say you're wrong.
It had nothing to do with smoking, it was just an in your face hit of political incorrectness at the liberals.
I’ve only seen it once. I took it as a hit against political correctness, but also a play on the Smoking Man from citizen Kane.
14 Trillion in fiscal debt...100 Trillion in unfunded liabilities...going in the hole 4 Billion a day.....a lawless occuppier in the WH...and we are bent out of shape over an ad with smoking in it??? We suck.
“...When did entitlements for empowerment zones become something the tea party cares for? Or, being ABC American First Black Second and Conservative Third I just dont see it man....”

When did your boy Ricky’s coddling to illegal aliens appeal to any real conservative?
It’s the energy. We need to develop our resources and we need to do it yesterday. Perry is the only one I trust to do it right and quickly. Sure he is not perfect, all the candidates are not perfect. Perry is the energy candidate! For sure!
What do you like about Cain’s ABC philosophy?
What do you like about illegal aliens?
Well, is this thread about smoking, or about the ad? Whatever. Here are my worthless thoughts on smoking. I used to smoke—smoked for some 30 years. I quit. I have been chewing nicotine gum for more than five years now. I no longer smoke. I don’t begrudge anyone that does. It ain’t healthy, but so are many things. I like polite smokers, ones that don’t blow it in your face in tight surroundings like the casino floor. I tried to be a polite smoker.
Giving it up took nearly 10 years. Finally took. yeah, I still chew nicotine gum, but I am not smoking!
Is it a liberal/conservative trait? I dunno. Who cares? But the hell with the nannies and the statists.
my three cents of drivel on smoking
Perry is not the perfect candidate like I said. Now, what do you like about ABC?
Bingo!
But, I do love Perry’s energy plan and flat tax over Cain’s 909 plan or is is 990 or 99 or maybe it is just 9 now? Dunno
Smoking is NOT a local issue and is the epitome about getting less regulation. How is it promoting smoking, he takes a drag of the cigarette in the final 3 seconds.......
You people focusing on just that aspect of it are making my head spin. You are falling for the LSM spin on what is actually a good message. Of course I heard it on the radio before I had ever seen it and that may have a bearing on how I viewed it.
I’ll not cast a vote for Ricky boy. <-period
