Democratic Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi of Castro Valley has been charged with felony grand theft after being caught on video surveillance allegedly shoplifting more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from San Franciscos Neiman Marcus store on Union Square, prosecutors say.
Hayashi, 45, who has served in the Assembly since 2006 and is married to Alameda Superior Court Judge Dennis Hayashi was arraigned Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court. She had earlier posted $15,000 bail.

A former boss told me of a lady in town who was a known shoplifter. Her husband had a deal worked out with the storekeepers to just bill him for anything she stole and not contact authorities. Of course this was a small town in the 50’s so they agreed. You are right, it is probably a compulsive disorder- not excusing it, just explaining why she would take such a risk.
She’s a part of the OccupyNiemanMarcus group. And she’s a dem, so why should she have to follow the rules like the rest of us?
It’s part of the Occupy Neiman Marcus movement. Thanks NativeNewYorker.
Wonder if she plans to put this on her expense claim at the legislature?
Now if she striped naked and posted it on YouTube then there might be a problem but only after the ethics committee investigates her electability.
Your right. A Deuce and a Quarter brand new, was about 3 G’s around 1962. Lots of power. The Cadillac of the Buick Line.
An extra 100.00 for the Gangster Lean.
How did you arrive at that diagnosis?
Perhaps she stole things because she didn't want to pay for them. Perhaps she's a common thief.
Perhaps she thought her “assistant” was going to pay for the stuff (a la Winona Ryder). (wink wink)
A friend of my parents had the same problem and her husband worked the same deal with local shopkeepers. Again, it was in the 50’s, not so sure how it’d work today. This woman’s husband is a judge in the area, should be interesting to see how it’s handled.
Democrat, that explains it.
Not theft, just undocumented purchases.
From when I was in the Navy, one of the most popular Protestant Chaplains on base, an LCDR and a weekly contributor to the base newspaper, was arrested for shoplifting.
In fact, he was due in the Base theater to give the Opening Prayer at some kind of award ceremony that afternoon, when suddenly he got the urge to steal a pair of shoes...
Weird...
DEMOCRAT AS ALWAYS.
In California theft of goods over 400 dollars is grand theft.
“Not theft, just undocumented purchases.”
That’s going to be the type of plea, just wait.
She's a Rat, this is San Fran, there is no shame...........
She was occupying Neiman’s.
I’ve actually done that - paid for three bags of children’s clothes, and wheeled out the cart with four unpaid-for dresses hanging from the cart handle. I saw them when I was getting my daughter out of the cart seat, and whoops, 180 back into the store.
Putting stuff in a shopping bag while you’re still shopping though, that’s gonna get loss-protection services trailing you.
