Marine Scott Olsen Will Undergo Brain Surgery, And OccupyMARINES Are Making Demands
Business Insider ^ | 10/28/2011 | Robert Johnson and Linette Lopez

After being struck by a projectile at Tuesday's Occupy Oakland evictions, Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen is lucid and awaiting brain surgery.

The Guardian reports Olsen "responded with a very large smile" when his parents arrived from Wisconsin to visit him at the hospital. Medical officials say Olsen's able to write and hear, but is having trouble speaking.

Meanwhile, Oakland's Mayor Jean Quan who left town after authorizing the raid, has separated herself from the police. Quan said, "I only asked the chief to do one thing: to do it when it was the safest for both the police and the demonstrators."

Her interim police chief then denied his men had used rubber bullets or flashbang grenades. His goal, he said, "... isn't to cause injury to anyone."

In response to the police tactics, OccupyMARINES have issued a formal list of requests in Oakland. Whether these requests are pursued or met should be an indicator of how strong or extensive this branch of the movement has become.

HERE IS THE TEXT OF THE OccupyMARINES DEMANDS:

OccupyMARINES Have Watched Closely The Response From The OPD, The Mayor, The Governor, And All Others Involved In The Oakland Attack On Peaceful Demonstrators; We Have Observed These Pathetic Cowards Refuse Responsibility For Their Actions That May Very Well Alter The Course Of Our Brother’s Life. Additionally, Many Other Police Departments Nationwide Deploy Similar Riot Tactics Against Demonstrators Honoring The OWS 8, A Peaceful Declaration Of Assembly; We Will Organize Peacefully Against These Departments.

In Response To The Oakland Shooting Of Scott Olsen OccupyMARINES Request The Following:

* The GOP Cowards Responsible For Influencing This Event Be Brought To Justice. Track Names And Photos Of Each And Email Them To Us

* Identify The 300 OPD Riot Officers By Name, Photo, And Badge Number With Boots On The Ground Engaging In Illegal Excessive Force Acts Against Peaceful Americans For Prosecution.

* Identify The Officer Responsible For Harming Scott Olsen By Name And Photo For Prosecution.

* The Honorable Resignation Of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan And Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan.

* A Public Apology From California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. For The Unlawful Injury Of Our Brother Scott Olsen.

We Fully Intend To Make An Example, Legally And Peacefully, Of The Corwards Associated With Harming An American Veteran. We Will Not Stop Until Our Aforementioned Demands Are Met In Their Entirety.

God Be With Scott Olsen, We Pray A Speedy Recovery For Him And His Mother.

Semper Fidelis Scott Olsen

Keep Pushing Forward America We Support You.

So, I guess a Marine veteran can do no wrong, now? If a Marine vet breaks into your home and you shoot him, he is being “attacked” AS A MARINE VET and the “attacker” must be lynched?

This is all it boils down to.

You’d reckon a ‘Marine’ would know how to follow lawful orders.

I disagree with the OWS message and ideology. But I do believe that they have a First Amendment right to do exactly what they are doing.

If proven to be true, OPD’s tactics were thuggery and outrageous.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

I usually don’t stick up for the police...but this OWS group is spoiling for a fight. The footage I saw was not in the park. Some of it was in the middle of the street. Some of it seemed to be in a Walgreen’s parking lot.

These idiots do not have a right to flood a street or parking lot with humanity, to block other people’s movements, or pusuit of business. In many of these cities, they also do not have the right to camp out in the park.

Some of the footage I saw also involved around 5 officers, essentially surrounded, backed up to each other in a protective circle...and all kinds of trash was being thrown at them.

I’m not happy this guy got hurt....but the left is. Think about that.

No they don't. We have a right to assemble and protest, we do not have a right to seize public parks and live on them. What you are suggesting is that public parks should have no rules at all and that would quickly degenerate into chaos. They'd become unmanageable, dangerous areas that the public could no longer use for anything.

If proven to be true, OPD’s tactics were thuggery and outrageous.

Nope. Occupy Oakland was spoiling for a fight. They took over a public park, prevented media and authorities from entering the park, regularly hurled urine and feces bags at police around the park, etc. The police asked them to abide by the park rules many times and they were repeatedly ignored. The leftist mayor allowed these revolutionaries to get completely out of hand and the result was violence when the police were finally asked to enforce the law.

What "right" do protesters have to break laws, trespass, ignore lawful orders of police to vacate public property according to ordinance, and then ASSAULT police (yes, it's happening.) Also, inciting a riot is a tremendous threat to law and order, and these mobs have done this repeatedly, calling for acts of lawbreaking and assaulting police. No, no rights to do these things exist.

Again, police were surrounded, threatened verbally, and ASSAULTED with paint pellets from guns. These violent mobs needed to be disbanded and/or arrested, and when they refused to comply, the appropriate actions were taken by police.

You deal with wanton thugs on their own level. As a former cop, I know. Nothing else works.

Just wait until the protest at the place that you work; and pound on YOUR window and scream obscenities at you.

I would like to see billy clubs and tear gas used on all of them.

Every Marine has at one point has riot control training. So he should have known that at one point the police would react the way they did. Peaceful protest is one thing, but when a group goes out of it's way to push an agenda that can cause bodily harm and major property damage, you are going to get a police response that is not going to be subtle. To quote Chesty Puller, if a Marine goes out looking for a bar fight and he gets hurt, it is no ones fault but his own. As actions have consequences.
