Rick Perry comes out against Confederate flag license plate

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has come out against the marketing of a Confederate license plate in his state, an issue that could come up again in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

As the Austin American Statesman's Jason Embry reports, the plate has been proposed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, an ancestral history group that has been involved in litigation to display the Confederate flag in state buildings and on monuments around the country.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles board has been considering the application for months. In April, the board deadlocked in a four-to-four vote on the plate, with another vote scheduled for next month.

On Wednesday, Perry broke his silence on the issue and said in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times and Tampa's Bay 9 News that he opposes the measure—an opinion that could very well shape the vote since the DMV board are all Perry appointees.

"That's just a part of history . . . . You don't need to scrape that wound again," Perry said. "It just doesn't need to happen."

Simply don’t understand why there are folks that want us to be ashamed of the Confederate Flag. We fly one as a part of our 5-flag display ... proudly, I might add.

However, I suppose a LaRaza plate would be O.K. with Ricardo.

now this.

I was giving Rick Perry some leeway up to this point and keeping an open mind. He's now lost this Texan and proud Southerner.

Plan on joining SCV in a few years. Rick Perry apparently doesn't understand tradition, and honoring one's ancestor's service.

2 months ago I was a lukewarn supporter. Now I am embarrassed to say that I did.

Perry, you are no more that a turncoat incompetent slug. Hang it up.

I thought he was supposed to be astute and savvy and a no holds barred kind of a guy. The more I see of him the less impressed I am. Now he's going to skip some of the debates. He might as well save his money. Stick a fork in him.

Yeah that’s right Perry. Try to shame me on the legacy of great great grandfather who fought and refused to ever speak of the war, the guy who who was a granddad to my grandma. Lets call his service a wound. Lets call my uncle’s effort to get his grave recognized a wound too. I never liked Perry and really didn’t understand why he turned me off; it was an instinct. Now I get it. He has shown me.

Same thoguhts here. Perry has basically pissed on the graves of all our confederate soldier ancestors.

Keep it up Ricardo, I am one Texan who will find someone else to support in the 2014 republican gubertorial primary.

"That's just a part of history . . . . You don't need to scrape that wound again," Perry said. "It just doesn't need to happen."

I can't believe Perry said that. He's just trying to give away the primaries. There is no other explanation.
