No television station has signed on to broadcast the Lincoln-Douglas debate between GOP presidential rivals Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich, and those hoping to attend the Nov. 5 debate will pay a steep price to see the drama unfold in-person.
General admission for the debate costs $200 although the price includes a slice of good ole apple pie, according to the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC, which is sponsoring the event.
Then theres the Patron Ticket, which costs $500. Patron-level purchasers will get prime seating and admission to a Nite Cap party after the debate, as well as a chance to mingle with the candidates over drinks and hors doerves afterward.
Top-level donors will pay $1,000 for the best seating in the house, a special room at the Woodlands Resort in Houston for the Nite Cap party, and a professional picture taken with the candidates.
Students can get in for $150, but those tickets are sold out.
Gingrich has been a long-time proponent of the Lincoln-Douglas debate style, because it gives candidates more time to have a detailed policy discussion. Gingrich has repeatedly said that if he were the Republican nominee, he would challenge President Obama to seven three-hour Lincoln-Douglas style debates.
The debates typically have a time-keeper, not a moderator, although this TTPP debate will be moderated by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a Tea Party favorite.
Or the reverse could happen.
Amen brother!
“I like the sounds of this very much...and I hope they open it up to a pay-per-view (once the seats are sold out of course)”
I suppose you could call it SurvivorSeries. :)
I”m thinking TV will have to stay away from this; since only two candidates were invited, all the other candidates would scream about wanting equal access if a network covered this one. Or, it might get counted as an in-kind campaign contribution.
Yap, I have been dreaming of that for some time now!
Amen to that (don't care about the D's, actually). And kudos to Cain for putting his growing front-runner status on the line with a skilled debater like Gingrich. It shows the same self-confidence as that "Give Pizza A Chance" video that we're not supposed to post anymore :)
P.S. I suspect Fox or C-Span would run this in a minute, but I've got a hunch the fund-raising aspect is important to both -- not that there's anything wrong with that.
Good.
That will keep the Riff-Raff out.
If the idiot journalist who produced this screed thinks the ticket is a “steep price”, I wonder what he would call any function at which Obama or Biden appears?
That would work for me, too, as well.
I’d love to go to that one.
LOL.... You’re tricky. Perhaps you meant to use this quote.
“I could vote for a Gingrich/Cain Ticket.”
That's about the next-best setup of the current "Contenders", IMHO
Well, I kinew Abe, and I can terll you that Gingrich is no Abe Lincoln! :o)
This is true and what impresses me most is Cain is not afraid to go head to head with Gingrich, what we need in a President now is one who has no fear.
I would gladly pay $1000 to attend, but my eyes, ears and legs aren’t so good anymore. So I just might be sending Herman Cain $1000 anyway.
RE: Well, I knew Abe, and I can tell you that Gingrich is no Abe Lincoln! :o)
What’s your secret to living to be over 150 ? :)
Indeed. I suspect Newt will mop the floor with him. This ought to be exactly the type of setting that Newt should thrive on. If Cain can even hold his own in a forum like this, he'll be a much stronger candidate than anyone gives him credit for being.
Cain is unflappable. I’m nervous for him, though, lol. There is no doubt Newt knows more policy than Cain he’s a walking encyclopedia. But Cain connects with people better than Newt. We’ll see!
