Senators Propose Law to Make Fake Maple Syrup a Felony Offense

Senators from maple syrup-producing states are seeking a law to make selling the fake stuff a punishable offense.

Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, proposed legislation Thursday to make selling fraudulent maple syrup a felony. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is called the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement (MAPLE) Act.

Leahy stated in a press release that he is alarmed at the increasing number of people and businesses claiming to sell Vermont maple syrup but actually selling something "that is not maple syrup at all."

"This is fraud, plain and simple, and it undermines a key part of Vermont's economy," Leahy stated in the release.

Collins, whose state is the third biggest producer of pure maple syrup in the country, stated that fake labeling hurts the agricultural industry and defrauds customers "who have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing."

Don’t we already have laws against false advertising in the Uniform Commercial Code?

The UCC is not a criminal code.

Oh, that’s a good point. Not that it isn’t still a stupid law, but it’s different.

I’d like to see a label from some mid west company that reads “This is Real maple syrup. Not that crap from Vermont” - just to piss the libs off.

If it is “fraud plain and simple” then we don’t need another law. Prosecute them for Fraud.

We need a law against fake butter with tricky names

Good for Wisconsin!

So many people are ignorant and think their margarine is butter because it has butter in the name they buy.

True maple syrup, which is incredibly high in sugar, might send a diabetic into a coma. Thus, there is a continuing market for the false stuff.

So, label it accordingly. Most diabetics are responsible enough to avoid life-threatening sweets! Maple Flavored Syrup, instead of Pure Maple Syrup.

Maybe we could have a fake representative fraud felony? These people fail to represent We the People, and that is fraud.

If you check the brands of sugar free syrup on the market you will find that they are sold as “sugar free” and “maple flavor.” The New Englanders, as usual, are beating a dead horse.
