Senators from maple syrup-producing states are seeking a law to make selling the fake stuff a punishable offense.
Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, proposed legislation Thursday to make selling fraudulent maple syrup a felony. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is called the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement (MAPLE) Act.
Leahy stated in a press release that he is alarmed at the increasing number of people and businesses claiming to sell Vermont maple syrup but actually selling something "that is not maple syrup at all."
"This is fraud, plain and simple, and it undermines a key part of Vermont's economy," Leahy stated in the release.
Collins, whose state is the third biggest producer of pure maple syrup in the country, stated that fake labeling hurts the agricultural industry and defrauds customers "who have the right to know exactly what they are purchasing."

Buy the cheaper darker grades, rather than the lightest ones. They cost less, and have a lot more maple flavour.
(How many hours of maintenance/repair are required for an hour on the road/track?)
Look up Wisconsin Statute 97.18.
Three months in jail for serving "butter colored margarine in a restaurant, or to serve margarine to students, patients or prisoners without a doctors order or to sell margarine in less than one pound blocks.......
I agree.
This will just increase the profits and violence of the syrup cartels.
I can see it now.
Swat team raid, not on a drug den, on a fake Maple syrup manufacturing sweatshop.
The horor.
“This is fraud, plain and simple, and it undermines a key part of Vermont’s economy,” Leahy stated in the release.
So let me get this straight. The Leftists want me to buy locally grown food so that I don’t harm the environment with all the shipping. Leahy needs to be consistent and insist that Vermont syrup needs to stay in Vermont...for the sake of the environment.
I hate to come across as a sap, but do you mind if I tap in to this thread? It just makes my blood boil.
The carnage will be dreadful. Blood on the snow. Bears!
Yep this is a top priority issue, we all have been waiting for action.
And I see from your tagline that you’re “sticking” with Herman!
Sweet!!!!!
NO BLOOD FOR SYRUP!!!!!!!!!
That explains the bumper sticker I saw on Sen. Leahy’s car: “Say No to Cain. Vote For the Real Sap”.
We tried Vermont Maple syrup years ago, when we owned an A-Frame in Killington, we didn’t like it. It was too sweet and expensive, so we went back to good old Log Cabin syrup.
Now I use the sugar free stuff.
LOL
I’m sure Senator Leahy will vouch for the 100% authenticity of that Cajun restaurant up there on the ski slopes of Stowe....
Total smackdown!! That’ll leave a mark!!
Why, thank you!
