Washington (CNN) -- Democrats on the debt-reduction super committee proposed a plan for slashing up to $3 trillion from the federal debt but Republicans swiftly and decisively rejected it because it relied heavily on tax increases, according to several congressional sources from both parties.
One top Republican aide described the Democratic offer, made in a closed meeting Tuesday, as "outrageously absurd" and a "non-starter," and a sign the super committee may ultimately fail. But this is the first time in the months since the committee began its negotiations that any group on the panel has offered a specific plan.
Democratic sources told CNN that at the meeting Tuesday the plan was presented to the 12-member committee by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Montana, the Finance Committee chairman. A majority of the six Democrats on the super committee supported the proposal but sources declined to say which member or members disagreed.

Holy crap, the GOP held it together? My beeber is stuned.
I still want to know just what the HELL Boehner and McConnell were thinking when they agreed to this BULLSH*T.
MORONS!
Their top priority should be to end the trade deficit. Ending the trade deficit would solve job, tax, recession and debt problems all at once.
The super commitee is another one of thier despicable moves to pass thier agenda with zero being the tie breaker. They would not accept a super commitee during a conservative or republican administration would they?
A majority of the six Democrats on the super committee supported the proposal but sources declined to say which member or members disagreed.
Sooooo, only FOUR of the democrats supported the propophal?
Democrat panel SPLIT, CHASM yawns over tax hikes,
party unity asunder etc, etc, etc.
Which if it were Pubbies would be how it would read.
Lol! Are you a Belieber? This is series business, you know.
....well first of all you have to have a brain.
Well, that ‘splains EVERYTHING!!
Need to declare OPEN SEASON on RINOs!
I hate this whole deal.
If the pubbies don’t deal, then the US defense budget is axed big time.
This was so predictable from the day Boehner and McConnell caved on the debt extension.
For years there was no movement on eliminating unnecessary military bases. The congress created a committee that generated lists of bases to close on a single up-or-down vote. They succeeded in closing lots of unnecessary military bases.
I view the super committee as a similar last chance effort to get something done. There is nothing about the committee that guarantees what their ultimate decision will be. And whatever it is it will be subject to a single up-or-down vote.
We should wait and see what happens. Although this is something our congress should be able to handle without a super committee, they have shown in the past that such extreme measures are sometimes necessary.
Even Democrats like defense spending, especially during recessions. They might talk like doves about defense spending in general, but they are hawks when it comes to protecting the defense jobs in their districts.
Vey series! Time for a shower!
So four of twelve members supported it, that means three-quarters of the committee did not and yet this massive bi-partisan rejection is spun as "GOP rejects."
The whole intention of this “deal” was to make very visable cuts while the repubs hold the house.
The super joke will remain deadlocked until the Nov 23 deadline. Then the automatic spending cuts kick in and hit medicare and the military hard. These two were picked because they will be very visable cuts. Then the party’s media can run out right before Thanksgiving and howl about how hard hearted the repubs are for allowing all this to happen. They just wouldn’t compromise dontchaknow.
The dims will financially wreck this country to get power back in the house. This is their ultimate goal. They will have these massive cuts to run on all next year.
