Perry’s tax plan strikes chord, one-ups Romney

GRAY COURT, S.C. – Rick Perry, Republican presidential candidate and Texas governor, has released an economic plan full of long-held conservative goals, including personal accounts for Social Security, an optional flat tax, major spending cuts and a series of tax cuts.

The plan would reduce the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, eliminate taxes on dividends and many capital gains and essentially cap individual tax rates at 20 percent.

Perry argues these tax cuts will spur economic growth by creating a more favorable environment for wealthy people and corporations to start or expand businesses.

But without significant spending reductions, the tax cuts could drastically increase federal budget deficits.

“Taxes will be cut across all income groups in America, and the net benefit will be more money in Americans’ pockets with greater investment in the private economy,” Perry said at ISO Poly Films Inc. in South Carolina.

With the “Cut, Balance and Grow” plan, Perry seems determined to re-energize his campaign and reassert himself as a candidate after weeks of struggles.

In an interview with John Harwood, a reporter with CNBC and the New York Times, Perry cast Romney – the GOP frontrunner – as a “fat cat.”

Perry is clearly looking to woo tea party conservatives who have been reluctant to back Romney. In almost every way, he presents policies that are slightly more conservative than those of the former Massachusetts governor.

I believe in empowerment zones. Most of the unemployed black Americans in this country are in these mostly economically depressed areas. It could be, and I’m only using this as an example, because we haven’t finished establishing the parameters yet. Instead of in a designated empowerment zone, it being 9-9-9, it could be, as an example only, 3-3-3. What this does, because you have a lot of African-Americans located in cities like Detroit, disproportionately, it would encourage businesses to stay in business there or to move there. It would encourage people to work there, because if you live in the empowerment zone, you’re going to pay a smaller percentage in taxes.”

Let me check with you guardians of all things racial. Is this statement racial? Cause that Presidential Candidate Herman Cain on Oct.14th on CNN. Where do you suppose these businesses would move from?

” I’m happy with new ideas from perry or newt. “

And lets hope that these all come together in one plan that will impact our country, and rid us of the current occupant of the White House

The actions of politicians on our side during the Obama debacle have jaded me toward any of them.

Perry has the stats and the background for me. That is it and he appears to be willing to get a little nasty if the occasion calls for it. Has anyone asked for Obama's grades yet?

Perry at least brought it up "hey my grades were plastered all over the front page, at least he could show us his grades"

This is not going to be anything but a brawl come Nov. nasty, ugly, defamatory and I think we better give as good as we get and have a team willing to do that.

the fact Jeb Bush came out and told Perry to tone it down on Romney tells me everything.

But it was a good thing when Sarah discussed everything with Todd. Go figure.

Hopefully from Dallas, get rid of the money going to ILLEGAL ALIENS and spend it on American citizens.

You are way too sensitive to be a native Texan, are you a transplant from Rhode Island or New York?

Perry would get my vote if he wins the primary but his mouthful of mush debating style will never put him above third place.

If mittens is the flip-flopper, anita is the kid in the corner with the dunce cap on.

Perry just wants to go home, drink his warm milk and go to sleep.

If a debate lasts longer than an hour, anita needs a nap.

“You mean the Forbes plan”

Sure, I think it’s pretty well known by now that Forbes advised Perry on putting together this plan and has endorsed him for POTUS. Not sure what you’re implying by asking that question, but I don’t think anyone here is claiming that Perry came up with this totally on his own without outside counsel.

Sensitive? I'm not throwing out the racist card. That's about as low budget as it gets.

Hopefully from Dallas huh? Cute.

Perry isn’t even on the radar anymore.

Good, then start worrying about Romney and Obama.

But keep checking the mail every day for the Perry Prize that will never come.

Then, why are you worrying about him? Start worrying about Romney and Obama.

It's going to get ugly. Perry will get ugly back.

What is your opinion of how Perry did when he "got ugly" with Romney in the last debate?

Nowhere, but everyone here on FR loved Todd and his involvement with Sarah but now they have nothing but contempt for Anita Perry.

I would hope that ALL of us could see Obama as the enemy. I will support whichever candidate is the Republican nominee. I despise Obama and the damage he and the RATS have done to our country.

Interesting he is NOT concerned about those two, isn’t it? Probably says it all.

“Those who don’t pay taxes under the current plan will use that and continue not to pay taxes. Those who would pay less under the new plan will use that and cut their tax burden. It does nothing to widen the tax base and does nothing except reduce the tax receipts.”

The intention of most conservatives going back to Reagan is to REDUCE the tax burden, not increase it. It was proven by JFK in the 60s, Reagan in the 80s, and Bush in the early 2000s that cutting taxes stimulates economic growth, which in turn INCREASES tax receipts. I see no reason why this plan can’t produce similar results, especially since he also eliminates capital gains and dividends taxes, which is a very smart thing to do if you want to spur investment and create jobs.

As for spending, part of Perry’s plan is to reduce spending to 18% of GDP, from the current levels of around 25%. This would put us back to spending levels of the late 1990s, when we were running budget surpluses.

As for Perry overall, there are a few issues to be concerned about, but I don’t believe his economic plan is one of them.

I'm worried about all the candidates. One of the posters remarked about "the crucible of debate." Most of what I've seen produced so far is iron pyrite, aka fool's gold.

It's not enough to say they're better than Obama or Romney. So is my cat. Would you like a "Wilby 2012" bumper sticker? He promises a mouse in every pot.

I'm not going to be a Perry Krishna just because Obama is lousy.

Perhaps, but they also do not care much for Hillary Clinton, Teresa Heinz-Kerry, or Michelle Obama. Since all Presidents and most candidates have been men, you may be mistaking the gender with the type of advice they're giving and they message they're projecting.

If Todd were out there making excuses for Sarah's poor debate performances or saying burning bushes were asking her to run, he'd get the same treatment. Guaranteed.
