An avalanche of media scrutiny and an uneven debate performance have done little to drag down Herman Cain's momentum in the GOP race for president, a new poll shows.
A CBS/New York Times survey of Republicans nationally finds the former pizza chain executive leading the field with 25% of the vote, 4 percentage points ahead of Mitt Romney.
Newt Gingrich places third at 10%, followed by Ron Paul at 8% and Rick Perry at 6%.
Cain and Romney were tied at 17% each in the previous survey; Perry had placed at 12%.
One reason for Cain's continued strength: he now has support of one-third of self-identified tea party supporters, nearly twice the amount of any other Republican.

This shows how little conservative Republicans are influenced by the media, including Fox News.
The media have been practically unanimous in taking the line that people should not take Cain seriously, yet the media coverage seems to have had little effect on his standing with conservative Republicans.

Because he is REAL and has principles. People see that. Unlike Romney and Perry who are politicians and bring out crap like revamping the tax code after the real conservative did. Romney and Perry are followers.

I like Cain a lot and he will have my vote if he’s the GOP nominee. That said, the smoking bit is the wrong angle if you ask me. For every libertarian type that applauds this, there is a social conservative that doesn’t agree.
At the end of the day smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait.

Cain is first, Gingrich is third. Excellent.

If you are ever around a military base or hang out with a lot of military personnel, I'd keep that little view a secret if I were you, some might not be too happy with you calling them a liberal.

At the end of the day smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait. What the hell does that even mean? How about smoking is a personal choice; just don't let your liberties infringe upon mine. That would be conservative in my opinion.

I just wish they would quit refering to him as a pizza chain ceo- he has done more than any other candidate combined

Social conservatives don’t like smoking?
Smoking might be a health issue but a values issue? No.
I think nanny staters prohibiting smoking and telling others what to do are far more lib than conservative!

About 31% of liberals smoke...20% of conservatives. It's a LIBERAL trait.

Liberals want to make tobacco use the one and only mortal sin (besides their definitions of racism, sexism etc.)
I am a social conservative. I am a non-smoker. My fathert smoked and got lung cancer at 35 (it was caught early, and he lived).
Many liberals in the '50s described themselves as anti-anti-Communist, which is not the same as being pro-Communist. I, and many conservatives, describe myself as anti-anti-smoking, which is NOT the same as being pro-smoking.
For the record, the favorite conservative of many of us is G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton was a fierce defender of smoking.

At the end of the day smoking is a liberal trait, not a conservative trait. Cigarettes maybe, but certainly not cigars. Cigars are a favorite of intellectual conservatives, (Clinton wasn't smoking his).
To: Drango
I will be voting for Cain if Romney or Perry are the Republican nominee.
I have never smoked. I am all for those who wish to doing so.
As a social conservative, this is an issue that outs social liberals. Everyone dies.
