Ex-McCain lawyer: Barack Obama ‘mugged’ John McCain in 2008

Sen. John McCain felt like he was “mugged” by Barack Obama when the Democrat broke a promise to use public financing during the 2008 presidential campaign, according to a top McCain adviser.

Trevor Potter, who served as the lead lawyer for McCain’s Republican presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2008, suggested Obama’s move was unprincipled and effectively killed the Watergate-era public-financing program.

“What happened to [McCain] was, he — I think he feels he got mugged first by the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, who walked away from the public financing of the general election, and then by the press, who let Obama get away with it,” said Potter in an interview for POLITICO’s video series on money and politics that launched Tuesday.

According to Potter, McCain “felt the principle there wasn’t the political reality of who could raise more money. It was his belief in the importance of a public funding system, which he thought Obama shared, until he didn’t share it,” Potter said. “The result of all of that is that we now don’t have a functioning presidential public financing system. And that’s, I think, bad news for the country.”

Potter is a former Federal Election Commission chairman who advised McCain on the 2002 campaign finance reform law commonly known as McCain-Feingold and founded a group that advocates stricter campaign rules. He has long been at the fore of efforts to lessen the influence of big money in politics, including the presidential public finance system.

Mugged my foot. McCain willingly and enthusiastically emptied his own pockets.

Dumba$$. McCain kept reaching his arm across the aisle, and, when push came to shove, they bit it off.

Poor Mc.

All that reaching across the aisle.

All those appearances on the Sunday morning talkies.

All to no avail.

[If Mc couldn’t see those things coming, Mc didn’t deserve to be president anyway. Trusting a Dem? Trusting the Press? Mc’s been in Washington long enough to know better.]

McQueeg to a townhall meeting crowd during the campaign: "My friends ... I have to tell you; I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States.”

We sure screwed those conservatives didn't we?

I don't like Obama, but it is McCain's fault that he lost! If he wasn't so busy appeasing Democrats (probably because they reminded him of his North Vietnamese Communist captors), then he wouldn't have been in this trouble.

And while we're at it McWimp don't forget how your pals in the lib/commie media mugged you also by abandoning you after they mussed your hair and said you were a maverick because you spit on fellow Republicans and the first amendment.

This extremely psychologically disturbed person set himself up for a fall. But wait! Juan McAmnesty assures us that Democrats such as the late Ted Kennedy are men of honor. Just ask Mary Jo Kopechne.

Based on ALOT of things McCain did, I was (and still am) convinced that he wanted Obama to win. Why, I don’t know... perhaps all the power-brokers (Dems and Repubs alike) felt it was time to have our first Black president for some reason.

In general, John McCain mugged John McCain. Zero just finished what the arch-RINO started.

I think the Dems used McCain as enemy nations infiltrate another nation. I mean the tactic of taking a stupid person such as McCain, saying he is smart, and saying he is so much better than most of his countrymen. Except the Democrats used it to defeat their rival party for President instead of an enemy nation to great effect.

Agreements only last when both sides have more to gain by keeping the agreement, than they have by breaking the agreement.

Obama had more to gain by breaking the agreement, so he did.

What kind of dunderhead is McCain if he really expected the Democrats to keep an agreement that wasn’t in their best interest.

Remember how the Lame Streams touted the GOP candidate McCain so worthy during the primaries? Then when ‘The Maverick’ was crowned as nominee they flung the dirt at him until they switched targets when Sarah arrived. Still hard to believe they (GOP) stuck us with McLame....
