Perry calls on Romney to release tax returns
Boston Globe ^ | October 25, 2011 | Matt Viser

WASHINGTON – Rick Perry, after calling Mitt Romney a “fat cat,” today also called on the former Massachusetts governor to release his income tax returns, an indication that Perry will increasingly make an issue of Romney’s wealth in the Republican presidential primary.

The strong charges from Perry are striking coming from a candidate who himself two months ago accused President Obama of “trying to engage in class warfare and shooting high-powered bullets at people who have corporate jets.”

Now, as Perry tries to gain an edge on Romney – by far the wealthiest candidate in the race – the Texas governor is criticizing his wealth as a way to cast him as out of touch.

“Governor Perry has always released his tax returns and Mitt Romney and the other candidates should do the same,” Perry spokesman Mark Miner told Politico earlier today.

Perry has voluntarily released his tax returns going back to the 1980s. In his most recent returns, he reported nearly $217,500 in adjusted gross income in 2010, and $51,000 in federal taxes, according to the Texas Tribune.

Romney has never released his tax returns, and has declined requests to do so this year. His total worth is estimated at $190 million to $250 million, according to his personal financial disclosure statements and his campaign.

Class warfare by a “conservative”, very nice. I don’t like Romney at all, but this is not going to help Perry.

What a ridiculous claim. Since when is calling on an opponent to release tax records tax warfare. It's common practice!

Perry is on CNN right now saying that if he is POTUS he'll balance the budget by 2020...

That's 8 years. Is that a problem for you?

What is the first sentence in the article? Explain how that isn’t class warfare. As I said, I don’t like Romney, but class warfare is best left to the D’s.

“Fat cat” was lifted from an earlier comment and tacked on to this article.

***************************

.......”Perry drafted his proposal with help from Steve Forbes, who proposed a flat tax when he ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1996 and 2000 and has endorsed the Texan’s candidacy. At the time, he was criticized by Republican primary rival Pat Buchanan for a proposal Buchanan said seemed to have been drafted at a yacht club, and by Romney for pitching “a tax cut for fat cats.”

Asked about the criticism, Perry told CNBC of Romney: “I consider him to be a fat cat.”

See post #26.

Perry was quoting a comment that Romney made years past to criticize the Flat Tax when it was proposed by Steve Forbes.

Ummm, no. I'd love to vote for a guy who promises to balance the budget after his 2 terms in the WH...

Perry will increasingly make an issue of Romney’s wealth

Hmmm... interesting. Why would he try to help Romney?

Would you love to vote for him if he promised to balance the budget after his 1 term? Let's see that would be 4 years. Do you think this can be balance before then? And btw were you a supporter of Perry's before?

As I said, if Perry is requesting Romney release his income tax returns because he wants to create class warfare, then this is wrong, but the first sentence does not indicate that that is why Perry is asking Romney to release his tax returns.

It is more likely that Perry is asking because the rest of them are doing it. If that is the case, then Perry is correct to ask Romney to do what the rest are doing.

Well, let’s see....Perry asks for Romney’s tax returns and the paper says it’s an indication that he is going to make an issue of his wealth......

Doesn’t that even follow a logical train of thought?

No. It’s MSM spin for Romney and against Perry.

We know what Romney’s wealth is more or less — it’s big.

Asking for tax returns is standard but Romney has never released his returns.

You tell me. I was only quoting the article that you yourself posted. "Perry will increasingly make an issue of Romney’s wealth"

Watching Perry and Romney go at each other is like watching the Nazis fight the Soviets, or Saddam Hussein attack the Iranian mullahs, or Shiites fight Sunnis. Perry might perform a great public service by demolishing Romney, but he’d better not try to destroy a real conservative like Cain.

I agree. Not only is Perry playing the class warfare card... he’s also continuing with the Mormon fear factor card. Mitt practices the biblical law of the tithe. That’s ten percent. He’s going to try to show Mitt giving millions (an easy tenth in terms of Mitt’s income)
to the LDS Church as something sinister... imho

We're many trillions in debt. As long as we continue to spend more than we bring in (i.e. budget deficits) our total debt will continue to increase.
By not having a balanced budget til 2020, Perry has just promised to increase the national debt during every year of his Presidency.
If you were spending more each month than you were earning how many months would it take you to cut back on your spending??? 2 months, 3 months, 4 months?
Perry says it will take him 96 months.
Can you support that???
