US's Most Powerful Nuclear Bomb Being Dismantled
ABC NEWS ^ | October 25, 2011 | BETSY BLANEY

"The last of the nation's most powerful nuclear bombs — a weapon hundreds of times stronger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima — is being disassembled nearly half a century after it was put into service at the height of the Cold War. The final components of the B53 bomb will be broken down Tuesday at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, the nation's only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility. The completion of the dismantling program is a year ahead of schedule, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, and aligns with President Barack Obama's goal of reducing the number of nuclear weapons. Thomas D'Agostino, the nuclear administration's chief, called the bomb's elimination a "significant milestone."

Dismantling these are stupid because those of us who live in reality know nuclear weapons will be around until the end of mankind. We are never going to get rid of our weapons and everyone knows it. They will always be on earth, because there will never be a way for the world to destroy them all at the same time, without any doubt they got them all, and then keeping them from ever being made again. If we did live in this fantasy world it might just make conventional war between two enemies who formerly had nukes breakout. We will never have complete peace.

It is up to the Air Force and the subcontractors.

It's my understanding that the Air Force wants to get out of the ICBM business anyway and offload that deterrence responsibility to the Navy. They want to concentrate their resources on defense of/attack from space. Nukes are so 20th century. The 21st century is about information weapons.

Folks should understand that nukes need maintenance.

That makes me wonder about the readiness of Russia's ICBM fleet. They haven't much money to spread around to maintain their military. How much of it went to ICBM/warhead maintenance would be interesting to know.

They are well on their way to being replaced. Kinetic weapons launched from space or from U.S. Navy rail guns can inflict nearly the amount of damage minus the messiness that small/medium sized nukes leave behind. The real interesting DARPA project currently underway is ArcLight. If it can be brought to fruition the Chinese will have a lot more to worry about then our carriers.

“We destroy our stockpile and China builds theirs”

Yup. And we should have kept the battleships, and the Sherman tanks, and the P-51 Mustangs, and the B-29 Superfortress, and the WWI bi-planes, and the Revolutionary War rifles. sarc/

A significant milestone for what and who?

Read State Dept Publication 5277 Freedom from War. You’ll find out who and what.

Thank you sincerely, its amazing that so many can not add 2 plus 2 and get 4! Now we have an avowed Communist who Hates America and tried to force Shria Law on Kenya just the summer before he illegally campaigned for our Nation’s Most Powerful and Important Office and there he reeks his Hatred today upon Our Dear and Loved AMERICA!

IIRC I think he destroyed the ENTIRE system, I don’t know where you’re getting 7/8’s from. He would also be very enthusiastic in correcting you.

The dirtier radiation fallout dangerous weapons are lower yield ones, but in lib land, it does not compute.

A stupid fat dog would not enlist jackals and wolves to fight a master for free food, only liberals do that.

You are aware that the darned thing is so big it won’t fit in the bomb bay of the B-1 or B-2, aren’t you? And that there is no way a B-52 could get close enough to its target to drop it?

Seriously, it isn’t about the size of the bomb or how powerful it is, not even when they started dismantling, it is about the white flag this freak is waving to the world. He is systematically dismantling everything this country stands for. It is one of two things either he is intentionally weakening this countries, strength, finances and constitution for an overthrow. Or he is desperate for votes and is throwing a bone to every group that is out there. Either way, this nation will never be the same after this terrorist leaves office.

Don’t start being rational, now. Some want to keep it anyway, because it makes a bigger BOOOM than other nukes. Never mind it could never be delivered to a target.

It would be cheaper to dispose of these 10 miles up over Iran or other locations in the Middle East:)

why Obama would release information on where the B53 was, before it was dismantled.

It's public knowledge that all of that work (final assembly, disassembly) of U.S. nukes is done at the Pantex Plant.

WHY would a Fascist ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IN CHIEF want the terrorists to know?
