Lots of buzz about this among political junkies on Twitter tonight, mostly of the so-bad-its-good variety. Is the image of this guy taking a soothing drag on camera after 40 seconds of ad-tastic exertion really that strange and transgressive? Cains campaign is all about unapologetic populist authenticity, and theres nothing more unapologetically, authentically populist than defiantly lighting one up when the mood strikes, politesse be damned. As the man says, Weve run a campaign like nobodys ever seen. If youve got a problem with casual smoking during presidential spots, well, that only proves what an uptight establishment RINO you really are.
In the next spot, Block should have a smoke in one hand and a can of Schlitz in the other. And as the camera pulls back, theres Cain next to him, eating a slice of Godfathers and giving a big thumbs-up.

cognitive dissonance, which is taught in mass media schools
it will be remembered and people will think about it and try and resolve it, you did. Good Ad a return to days before the govt redtricted parts of our lives and are trying to even restrict what we eat now..
And your opinion of Herman Cain is well known, so the same rule applies. Like I said, ads are targeted to specific groups. It didn't appeal to some people, including you. It did appeal to other people, including me. That doesn't make you wrong or me right. The effectiveness of an advertisement is very subjective.
You’re very concerned about this ad.
I am a Conservative.
I am a smoker.
I'm probably THE biggest hater of PC crapola you'll ever meet!
And I thought that the ad was STUPID; banal, inane, puerile, and extremely badly done! This is THE BLAIR WITCH whatever of kinda, sorta, can this really be a political ad ever done!
I want to like Cain, but he's NOT doing anything at all to make me want to vote for him and a whole lot of things making me NOT want to vote for him.
I won't vote for Romney........EVERY and nobody else is doing it for me either.
Read this thread.......Cain supporters love it and that's it. He had you all at "hello". That's just NOT going to work on the undecideds.
You're talking to Cain supporters. What is "codswallop?" We don't speak "faggot" here.
Prove it, concerned one.
The “I AM NOT A WITCH” made far more sense, actually; though it too was a dumb ad.
dynachrome ~ Larry Sinclair will be in it?
No silly, Larry is far too old to be a Twinkie...
It’s just some internet ad that some guy did. I don’t see the problem.
I'm responding to posters on this thread and not obsessing about this ad, what it means ( it's meaning bereft! ), and wondering why people think it's good/claiming it to be something it isn't/will make people like Cain enough to vote for him in the primaries.
I keep wanting Cain to convince me to vote for him and he keeps on not just failing to do that, but pushing me farther and farther away.
And I know the world of television ads.
Rush Limbaugh will go ballistic (in favor) of something like this. It is pure parody, comedy, irreverence (towards liberal PC in our society which just about everybody hates having shoved down their throats for 20 years), with a dash of political psy war. I love it. Libs won't know HOW to handle it, it is so out of their league and above their tactical level of thinking.
(And I myself am not even a smoker nor do I appreciate smoke.)
This was a video sent to his supporters, I’m not even sure it was meant to be a “campaign ad” as you and Allahpundit are suggesting.
In any case, it made me laugh, because it kind of suits Block. All it needed was some Gunsmoke music in the background
What "concerns" me and does so greatly, are the Cain supporters and the fact that they LOVE everything, especially that which is not there, about Cain.
So what? Don't vote for him! There. That's settled...see ya!
“And the smoking, at the end, is puerile and meaningless.
Are they going for some sort of retro-chic, Mad Men vibe, maybe? Otherwise, I don’t get it. “
Herman is easily the most likeable of all candidates. It would be great to see him lead.
But, I agree with comments above. The puff at the end. Why? I’m confused by that. What does the puff add to the message? Weird.
Herman’s smile is great. You can tell he is a real person.
Codswallop is a perfectly good English/American word. Go look it up, oh vocabulary deprived, uneducated, ridiculous person, who flings "faggot" as a type of language!
Bill Buckley would have known the word..........was HE a "faggot"?
Your over-emotion is showing. It is having the effect then. This ad is designed to do JUST THAT. Stir controversy and get people talking and give it traction and up his name ID, as well as kick liberal elitism, know-it-all ism right in the shins.
