Just the word CONELRAD gives me the creeps. I was 5 years old and in kindergarten when the Duck and Cover stuff was going on. It terrified me. I remember one morning at 3 AM a car in my neighborhood caught fire and the horn got stuck and woke me up. I thought it was the sirens and got so scared I got under my bed in the Duck and Cover position. I can still hear those scary sirens.
Awww, that is so sadly cute. You poor widdle fing. Let me give you a hug!
Were you still 5 then, or a bit older?
That reminds me of a morning when I didn’t need to be up early. I lived right down the block from a fire house, and sometime in the morning, sirens from two trucks sounded like it was an air raid. I’ve never woken up with a start and nearly fell out of bed like that before.
I can remember having those glossy paper textbook covers handed out to us in school that were printed in yellow, black and white, and they explained all about what you should do in the event of an attack, what the fallout shelter signs looked like (and where you could expect to find a shelter)and how thick a concrete and earth barrier would have to be to repel radiation waves. It even explained the differences in tone between a firehouse siren and a civil-defense siren.Scary but informative,in its day.
And all those terrifying air raid drills were pretty useless and unnecessary, considering that if nukes really were coming, hiding under your desk in a class full of glass-windows was going to be the worst place you possibly could be. Just goes to show you how idiotic government has been in the past, and still is, unfortunately.
