Police: Driver flipped license plate to save toll ($65)
SF Gate ^ | 10-13-11 | Chris Hawley

Virginia truck driver used a device out that could have come from a James Bond movie to try to get out of paying the $65 toll to cross the George Washington Bridge into New York City, police say. Nelson Vaquiz of Beaverdam, Va. was arrested on charges of using a cable in his truck cab to flip up his front license plate while going through a gateless toll lane on Interstate 95 without a toll transponder, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Thursday. Vaquiz had also bent up his rear plate so it couldn't be read by cameras, police said. Truck drivers have complained about steep toll increases that the Port Authority says it needs to finish building the new World Trade Center in Manhattan. By 2016 a five-axle truck will have to pay $105 to cross the bridge. Some drivers zip through the gateless express lanes on while obscuring their license plates so the Port Authority cannot track down and bill them. These toll cheats cost the Port Authority $14 million in 2009 and 2010. "Our police department takes this very seriously and are on the lookout for such maneuvers," Port Authority Spokesman Ron Marsico said. "Hopefully this will serve as a lesson." Vaquiz went through the E-ZPass lane on the New Jersey side of the bridge with a truck carrying pipes at 6:35 a.m. on Saturday, police said. A Port Authority police officer saw Vaquiz's license plate drop back into place and ordered the driver to pull over, but he did not stop, Marsico said. Other police officers forced him to stop before he could go over the bridge, Marsico said. Police impounded the truck. Vaquiz, 36, was charged with theft of service, possession of burglar tools and eluding arrest. He was released.

So the tolls were raised to rebuild the World Trade Center. That wouldn’t have been necessary if Muslim terrorists had not destroyed the old World Trade Center.

It is a sad commentary on today’s world. I really wish ethics were taught in school. So many people find ways to cheat and it is not right. If you can’t afford to go through a toll than go another way or don’t go. There are ways to by pass all tolls using the GPS. A bridge you might just have to suck it up and do the right thing and PAY FOR IT. I think that diet coke is ridiculous to pay for but you don’t see me going into the store and stealing it. NO! I either pay for it or I don’t buy it. What is wrong with people????

You're right, and Rosa Parks should have stayed in the back of the bus, because that was the law. She must not have had any ethics. I will treat the government ethically, when the government starts treating the people ethically.

And those damned original Tea Partiers should have just paid that duty on that tea! What the hell was Sam Adams and the rest of those revolutionaries thinking? Didn’t he know that patriots and conservatives are supposed to bend over and pay unreasonable fees to unreasonable tyrants?

What is wrong with people????

THAT is a bigger question than can be answered within the context of this forum. Maybe it can't be answered at all.

Just last night, I heard of a senior citizen couple (70 and 80 years old) being sent to prison, because $220,000 had erroneously been deposited into their bank account, and they turned around and sent monetary gifts to everyone they knew. When $67,000 appeared in my account, I called the bank...

If Americans understood the true burden of government (because if it were really brought out into the open), there would probably be open revolt against the government.

Patience my FRiend, patience. The spirit of Jefferson is alive and well, and more than ready to water that Tree of Liberty at the appropriate time.

I hope FREEPERS would not do that. That is really horrible. FREEPERS are ethical and conservatives don’t break the law.

In the case of Red Light cameras, which the spray is also marketed to beat, those laws have been deemed unconstitutional in several municipalities & states already. Not saying it's right. Just saying...

I know what you are saying. I am not a prude or perfect. But overall people are trying to get away with what they can. At 20 years of age I walked out of a waffle house without paying. In a group of friends and we all walked out. Of course drinking was involved.I still feel guilty at the age of 42 over that incident and it kills me to pass a waffle house as it reminds me of being a thief everytime.

Tolls used to be used to maintain the bridge or tunnel where they were collected. If the "cheats" cost $7 Million per year how much are these bastards collecting and where does all that money go?

Same story all across this land. When the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge was built, the "temporary" toll was promised to be only for that bridge, and to end when the cost of building it was paid off. That was sometime in the 1950s, but the 50 cent toll was continued and raised repeatedly, now at $5. The money has been used to build other bridges on the bay (each with their own high toll despite construction already paid for), and other unrelated state projects.

Same story for the Golden Gate Bridge, tolls are used for a bus system, ferry boats, and other pet projects long after the bridge costs were paid off by the "temporary" tolls.

The 1984 world of constant monitoring of us is here. Passing a "law" does not make it moral or Constitutional.

Most of the red light cameras are operated by private sector contractors. They decide who should get fined, they do the fining and then send the governmental entity its "piece of the action".

Read up on what Washington DC is doing with its speeding cameras. It is beyond reprehensible. It is a corrupt system of pure extortion, nothing less.

Read the founding documents of our country. We have an immoral and essentially illegal government. We have a moral obligation to NOT obey unconstitutional laws if it is within our ability to do so. This country would not exist if our founding fathers didn't believe that.

Most of us have something like that from our youth on our consciences.

But there is no equivalency here with that. The fact that many people are trying to beat it for selfish reasons does not make the laws Constitutional.

To search something you have to know that it exists!
