Herman Cain introduces 999 “Opportunity Zones”
Right Scoop ^ | 10/21/11 | Herman Cain

Herman Cain gave a speech today in Detroit introducing “Opportunity Zones” in his 999 plan. In short, if you are at or below poverty level, the plan will be 9-0-9.

While he was delivering it, I must say that it occurred to me that he was sounding more presidential than ever. That’s the first time I’ve had that thought.

It’s retarded and bureaucratic.

Hey! Let’s just spread the jobs around!!

The states shouldn’t have to beg DC for anything. The “zone” should be the entire USA.

This is why I can no longer be on the Cain train.

9-0-9 is dumb.

the ‘poor’ already pay no income taxes. he should have stuck with lowering the rates and broadening the base instead of pandering to the ‘gimme’ class like all the rest of the limp-wristed pubbies.

Interesting point...although...would it cause cities to intentionally underperform, so as to keep getting the breaks?

This is the last straw. I supported Cain but this latest attack on teachers and labor unions is too much. I don’t want people in inner city hell holes to actually get off welfare and start working. I don’t want those people to learn how to read. I don’t want to stop paying their welfare.

The most insidious part of this plan is it turns some of the most loyal democrat voters (blacks) against the biggest democrat financiers (unions).

You have gone too far this time Mr. Cain.

More federal bureaucracies, more states begging the feds for favors, lets incentivize your employer to move your job to places like Detroit. “Spread the Jobs Around”.

The flat tax, even across the board for everyone and no favorites and special zones and new bureacrats, is a much better solution!

I suppose income tax has to be phased out rather than just instntly removed (don’t we wish this could happen?) The people who receive the most from the government SHOULD pay taxes.

Unfortunately ‘depth of experience’ isn’t equal to ‘breadth of experience’.

No doubt he’s a good business guy, but that doesn’t mean he understands foreign affairs as well as being able to balance a budget.

I mean Ron Paul I am there with on fiscal issues but foreign policy-wise, no way. Trying to come up with this stuff on the fly and then having to modify or flop your position due to criticism is not the way to go. Not as a leader anyway. Vision and leadership is different than just being a manager.

I mean, I like Cain personally, he seems likeable. I think I’d really be up for him a lot more if he was going for a senate spot rather than Chief Executive because he’d have some time to develop a wider view of the world and how we fit in it (or should fit in it). I’m saying he’s got a lot of what we need, but just as he didn’t become a great business guy overnight, he could use some more experience to round him out to be a solid president across the board.

This would only be the beginning. Next it would be earned income credits and vouchers for the “poor and hard hit poor”. And eventually it would still just be the milk cows paying 9-9-9 or 12-10-9, or 17.5-15-13.

I heard what he said on Piers Morgan. If he MEANT to say that as President, I’m not a dictator, he should have said it. Don’t blame ME for reading Cain’s own words! Right now, I’m voting for him, but I’m afraid that his inexperience in the limelight may ultimately doom him. Bob

He’s a lot better qualified than Obama, but his 999 plan is going nowhere if the 16th Amendment is not repealed first. It’s a good theoretical exercise, but that’s about it. If it comes down to Cain and Romney in Pa, it’s a no-brainer. Cain it is. I’m not thrilled, however. Bob

Hey, you gotta hand it to the guy - he walks into DETROIT? and a ghetto blighted area to boot and PROPOSES THIS PLAN???

I mean — that takes some CAHONES. That takes believing in yourself!!

Gonna tell you right now ...even Sarah could not have gotten away with it.

Whatever — it doesn’t have to take long for it to work ...SHOW these people what WORK looks like, what SAVING looks like, what HAVING a job looks like first ...you can’t do it overnight.

Kudos to Cain, once again, for going where no man dares to tread.

And just to add ..I’d rather give these people a “break” through the 999 plan, that to just continue to hand them welfare checks for NOTHING. Sorry.

At least they will have worked for the “break.”

Perhaps something could be put into the law that states a 333 zone has so much time to stay a 333 zone. Once it goes over a certain percentage, it joins the 999 zones and allow there to be an incentive for that.

It’s simple behavioral psychology at work here.

That’s extremely ignorant. I would take a simple tax code that’s revenue neutral over playing around with the stupid system we have in place now. Plus with taxes being standardized you would have exactly what you want. A pro-business tax code. Business would know exactly what their costs were at all times in relation to taxes. Not to mention it would save them the costs of trying to “play with the numbers” and paying huge amounts of money to people who have to sort through the ridiculous mess. Taxes can then be reduced based on the results of the implementation and spending priorties.

I see. Another case of treating citizens UNEQUALLY under law. Sounds like a democrat.

If by "sounding more presidential," you mean "sounding more like obama," I agree.

That’s what those “urban hell holes” were designed for. Cities are built on trade, industry and innovation and die when there’s a lack of all 3. That’s why before WW2, rich people tended to live in the cities and poor people lived in the suburbs.
