Barack Obama enjoys an 8-point lead over Mitt Romney (12 over Herman Cain) in Illinois, his home state, a state he took by 25 points in 2008.
A poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at SIU Carbondale found Obama is under 50 against all contenders except Rick Perry.
Against Mitt Romney, it is President Obama 46.1%, Mitt Romney 38.5%.
Against Herman Cain, it is Barack Obama 46.3%, Herman Cain 34%.
Simon Institute Director David Yepsen said in a press release: You could look at this as being uncomfortably close for the president in his home state. On the other hand you could say Obama is holding up fairly well in Illinois, given the difficult year he has had politically and the continued poor performance of the economy.
Of course, a difficult year is a poor excuse if big if next year is worse.

8% with the cheating. Wonder what it would be in a clean poll?

Even McGovern won South Dakota and Mondale won Minnesota. There is something about that home state mentality.

Who are the other 15.4% for?
To: Mustang Driver
Well that’s quite interesting, I wonder what the polls are showing for 0bama in his REAL home state of Kenya? Or perhaps in Indonesia where he spent some of his formative years, or how about Hawaii where none of the doctors or hospitals rushed to claim him as ‘one of theirs’ back in ‘08?

Except for Tennessee. Otherwise, we would have had President Gore.

There is definitely a complacency in Illinois toward political corruption. It appears to be accepted as a way of life that I'd rather have my corrupt politician in office than for you to have your corrupt politician in office. Businesses continue to leave the state as the morons in Springfield raise taxes and feign bewilderment that anyone would want to leave. The smart ones leave because the dumb ones are too dumb to leave. Dumbness becomes concentrated. Under these circumstances, it makes sense for the people of Illinois to vote for the welfare king that will take from others to give to Illinois.
I gotta get outta this place, if its the last thing I ever do ...

If Liberals are in a parade they never wonder if it might not be that THEY are the one person out of step as opposed to everybody else suddenly being offbeat. If they have five spouses, they never wonder if possibly THEY might be difficult to live with. To be a Liberal is to never, ever, ever think you might be wrong, despite having been visibly and obviously wrong many times in the past. I too have such a sister.

Yep. We here in TN did a great job of flushing out the sewage in 2000.

Without knowledge of the polling sample, ie registered voters, likely voters, or just plain adults, what was the questions asked and how, it means very little.

Just a couple of weeks ago The Hermenator was down to both Perry and Romney. Now he is destroying Perry and even ahead of Romney in some polls. Give him a couple more weeks and he will be ahead of Obama, even in IL.
