I had a few incidents while over there that the Mrs. didn’t like but I explained them away as a level of courtesy and politeness that we’re not used to (my wife is from NYC). The Mrs. didn’t buy it saying ‘oh yeah?, so why men aren’t nearly as nice to you, eh?’.
To make a broad generalization, foreign men tend to both act like men, and gentlemen: simple things like holding a door open or applying the “ladies first” rule. IMHO.
