Steve Forbes, whose flat tax plan helped make him an unlikely contender for the Republican presidential nomination 15 years ago, is praising a new version of the idea from Rick Perry. And Forbes, who says he helped devise Perry's plan, left little doubt that he'll formally back the Texas governor before long.
In an interview with Yahoo News, Forbes called Perry's proposal, announced in a speech Wednesday, "the most exciting tax plan since Reagan's," in 1980.
Asked whether that included his own 1996 plan, Forbes said it did, because unlike him in 1996, when he fell short of upsetting front-runner Bob Dole, Perry "is going to win."
Forbes, the chief executive of his family's eponymous publishing empire, said the Perry camp reached out to him for help in crafting their plan. "We got into discussions of basic principles--how the thing might be shaped," he said. "The candidate concluded it ought be a simple rate. Make it as simple and bold as possible."

Forbes hasn't officially said that he's backing any candidate, but he left little doubt that he'll formally get behind Perry soon. He said he would announce his support for one candidate soon, "and I don't think it'll surprise anyone."......

The others have been running awhile. Perry will catch up and will be a strong candidate. He has some great ideas. He has been the strongest and longest Governor that TX has had. I am from TX.
LOL!
Let's hope it doesn't come to that!
Seriously though, I agree, Perry's plan will get heavy scrutiny, and it should. The simpler it is the better. That's the problem with 999, IMO. Multiple taxes and multiple phases before full effect. Too much wiggle room for legislators to poison the whole thing. To this day I am a strong believer in the KISS principle.
“No matter, the more candidates that propose a major renovation the worse Romeny looks as another RINO who’s content to nibble around the edges of the problem instead of attack it with a chainsaw.”
Well, actually, politically, what I see happening is that this sets up a new battle, the battle of the tax plans between Perry and Cain, and all the emphasis at the debates will now be on these battling plans, while the heat will probably be taken momentarily off of Romney (and the others) while these two (Perry and Cain) duke it out.
Romney is probably relieved that Perry is coming up with this flat tax plan, as it will compete with Cain’s 9-9-9 plan, and a lot of argument will surround which of these two plans is the better. Takes the heat off of Romney, at least for a while. So, these 2 plans pit the 2 anti-Romney candidates against each other and deflects attention from Romney, who would probably love having that happen.
Actually, I hope Cain has been boning up on foreign policy in his spare time (if he has any), as the format of the next debate is supposed to be on foreign policy and international affairs.
Forbes get excited by awakeing each morning!
I have some hesitation with Cain's 9-9-9. A great deal of hesitation. If he can figure out how to make it attractive to the 63,000,000 SS recipients, then maybe he has a chance. As is now he doesn't have a chance.
I am sure you were not looking for any Perry speeches since you are a Cain support and have been trashing Perry. He has a wonderful Energy Plan and he gave a speech on his tax plan at the Western Leadership Conference.
He's a smart guy! I get excited by that too! :)
You obviously did not see the Energy Plan, which would create several hundred thousand jobs in the 100 days. This would get the ball rolling. Perry knows energy very well. He has only been in a campaign for 2 months and the others have been running for months, and Romney for 5 years. Those so called debates run by liberal moderators were certainly not debates. However, you only want to smear and trash as you have from the moment he entered the race.
I am not looking for it but if it is such a big deal certainly the news would cover it.
Funny, I just watched Morris defend the plan and he is imminently persuasive.
Please, watch this: http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/defending-999-dick-morris-tv-lunch-alert/
The plan will boost the economy like Reagan did, increasing wealth for everyone.
While the sales tax is added to current state taxes, manufacturers will not be paying SS or high income taxes and the market will force prices on most items down.
Even poor people will have a net reduction in taxes because the SS and medicare taxes will be gone.
The huge boost in wealth will create jobs and make us all more prosperous.
This is why Cain is ahead in the poll. People recognize that he is a true leader.
“convoluted 9-9-9 plan”
Check out this defense of 999. Very persuasive.

I rechecked that figure- (I wondered if it was correct, and it seems high- Wikipedia says 51,000,000 in 2009.
I started to smear and trash the guy when I found out how liberal he is and not before. By the way, I have nothing to do with his poll numbers. His free falling poll numbers are all in his lap. I could not have done a better job though.
Good stuff, wish I could access the whole thing. Is registering a hassle?
Thanks. I will watch it.
“I just don’t see that Perry has demonstrated that he is that person, but I think Cain does demonstrate he can stand up to Obama, man to man, and win. “
How true. Perry is a poor communicator — make that VERY poor communicator — and when faced with the slick Billion dollar Obamainator that is a deal breaker.
