Steve Forbes, whose flat tax plan helped make him an unlikely contender for the Republican presidential nomination 15 years ago, is praising a new version of the idea from Rick Perry. And Forbes, who says he helped devise Perry's plan, left little doubt that he'll formally back the Texas governor before long.
In an interview with Yahoo News, Forbes called Perry's proposal, announced in a speech Wednesday, "the most exciting tax plan since Reagan's," in 1980.
Asked whether that included his own 1996 plan, Forbes said it did, because unlike him in 1996, when he fell short of upsetting front-runner Bob Dole, Perry "is going to win."
Forbes, the chief executive of his family's eponymous publishing empire, said the Perry camp reached out to him for help in crafting their plan. "We got into discussions of basic principles--how the thing might be shaped," he said. "The candidate concluded it ought be a simple rate. Make it as simple and bold as possible."

Forbes hasn't officially said that he's backing any candidate, but he left little doubt that he'll formally get behind Perry soon. He said he would announce his support for one candidate soon, "and I don't think it'll surprise anyone."......

If Perry is seriously and convincingly propose and support a flat tax, it will incline me to support him.
I truly like Herman Cain but 9-9-9 is his main agenda and I don’t like it as it stands. I appreciate the effort and some of the features but I don’t like the whole enchilada.
I think you're confusing Perry with Cain. Cain is backtracking on one thing or another almost every day, it seems.
After it’s all said and done, I agree with you. I like Cain but a simple flat-income-tax plan is better than a fairly convoluted 9-9-9 plan. I thought Cain looked great and Perry looked bad in the debates. If Perry’s going to make a run at it he’s going to need to show more cool-headed thoughtfulness in front of the lights and better communicate with the American people, IMO.
I didn’t even know Perry gave a speech. They said yesterday? I was watching tv all day and Cain was on every channel.....lol. I guess even the media has given up on Perry. That is a wonderful thought but seriously where was this so called speech??????
No matter, the more candidates that propose a major renovation the worse Romeny looks as another RINO who's content to nibble around the edges of the problem instead of attack it with a chainsaw.
It’s like a divemaster showing up without any gear, a boat, a clue where He’s going, or a plan to bring them all back. But Hey! He’s got nice hair.
He said the same thing last debate. Oh don’t ask me anything on the economy or jobs as in three days I will be ready to give a speech. How can you go to a debate on the economy and jobs and not be ready? That seems to be his MO. Obviously that is why he is at 7 percent. He is not even closely ready for prime time.
If Forbes is the guiding hand behind this plan, as he appears to be, I find it very encouraging. Forbes will make it simple and easy to understand.
Perry will need to sell it, so quite frankly the simpler the better! That’s a good deal for everybody.

I think you need to update your picture of Michael Reagan with Perry....he is NOT happy with Perry at all as of yesterday. Perry is losing more and more support daily and he did that ALL BY HIMSELF.
What is it with Cain. It seems like every day he’s talking his way out of something he said the day before. He spends all his time backtracking and bookselling. Should he be taken seriously?

Yes we should take him seriously. He is a conservative who deserves our respect and support. He is 100 percent pro-life and just said it on TV....media is trying hard to get a gotcha from him but failing miserably.
If Steve Forbes helped write the plan, there isn’t much of a shock that he supports the plan.
So long as Forbes doesn’t come out next week and say the plan is flawed, Perry’s OK.
Do I lose my child tax credit?
What about retired people on Social Security and fixed incomes? They can't afford a 15% tax increase.

Since this affects people employed at every level of production isn't this a VAT?
If this is revenue neutral and rich people will be paying less doesn't this mean that the middle class and the poor will be paying more?
Doesn't this benefit the illegals who work under the table?
Can't the self employed disguise their income so they pay less? Wouldn't a consumption tax be more fair?
Oh sure, it start low now, but won't a future President just jack up the rate?
I'm honestly happy to see Perry propose this. It raises my opinion of him. But he's about to get the Cain treatment. In fact it's alread begun. HuffPo Perry's Flat Tax Foolery. Good luck, Rick. If Cain falters you may be our only chance (though I'm beginning to think I could get drunk enough to vote for Gingrich if I had to).
Forbes commends Cain as well, and deservedly so. Cain has started a conversation and I like where it’s headed. I like the flat tax, always have.

And yet when ROmney launched a web site to stop his biggest threat, it was to attack Perry. Romney still says nothing bad about Cain. And Cain returns the favor for the guy he would like to see win the nomination if Cain loses.
I also have reservations about preachers being the president.

My choice would be Rick Perry. From my view, he clearly won the debate Tuesday and is coming out with a solid plan to rescue the economy (e.g., a flat tax and drill-baby-drill). Romney lost it as did Cain. Gingrich continues to do well. But neither he or Cain, or Bachmann, or Paul, or Santorum have the necessary combo of money and organization to carry on for a long haul. Once again, the race will be between Perry and Romney.
