The GOP could face a revolt from within its tea party grassroots base if it nominates an establishment candidate without true conservative, anti-big government values, one of Americas leading conservative pundits tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.
Specifically, columnist and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan told Newsmax that the nomination of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the architect of a state insurance plan that many say inspired Obamacare, could prompt the tea party movement to form a third party.
Its a real possibility because the tea party folks and the Republican conservatives and social conservatives and others are very apprehensive of Mitt Romney and they dont feel he is really one of us, Buchanan told Newsmax.
Theyve got reason for that feeling and that sentiment but if they do that, if, for example they persuaded Ron Paul to run on a third party ticket, Barack Obama would be easily re-elected, he added.
Buchanan would certainly know. A former aide to President Ronald Reagan, he was one of the first conservative commentators to hold a prominent job as a TV commentator and syndicated columnist in the mainstream media.
From 1966 through 1974, Buchanan was an assistant to Richard Nixon, and from 1985 to 1987, White House Director of Communications for Reagan.
Buchanan ran twice for the Republican nomination for president and then in 2000 ran for the White House on the Reform Party ticket. He said he can see a third party candidate emerging in 2012 if Mitt Romney gets the GOP nod.
Of the current Republican candidates he said, Certainly Michele Bachmann is one of us. I think Rick Perry is. I think Herman Cain is. If you are talking about a more traditional conservative certainly I would put Santorum in there.

Drop the hate my friend and the obnoxious attitude.
“How about if Cain or Rubio is on the ticket with Romney?”
As long as Romney is on the ticket, it’s a no-go.
Period. NO Romney in ANY capacity on ANY ticket combination you can imagine.
FUMR!
“So... all the many reservations about Romney notwithstanding, my question to all is a very basic one: Given a choice between Romney and Obama, ...”
The election isn’t either or. You can vote for someone beside the dem or repub, you know. You can write in as well.
If the choices are as you say, then I don’t vote for that office at all. I will concentrate on voting for conservative candidates for other offices but neither Romney nor Obama will EVER get my vote.
If all the people PO’d at the GOP right now simply picked a non-RINO Non-Party Hack candidate, got behind them and voted, we’d win hands down. No “Grand Old Party” required. But everyone is so scared that ‘my God we’ll have 4 more of Obama...”
Nope. Once upon a time there were several legit parties in this country. There need to be again. This GOP or death crap is pure fear mouthed by cowards.
The logic is not hard to follow. When you vote for a RINO, do not expect a conservative. Yet no matter how many times the Repubs (And I still have my Republican registration intact) put up a candidate opposing what we believe, we vote for them and make excuses to ourselves. I did it, many here did it. We were wrong.
We have to vote for what we believe, or we really believe in nothing but our own fear of “what if”.
“We have to vote for what we believe, or we really believe in nothing but our own fear of what if.”
EXACTLY.
And NOW, THIS time around, it is time we conservatives take a stand.
We MUST take a stand or the country is doomed.
If we do not take a stand it’s doomed. If we do, there is a far better chance we can salvage it.
Do people really think that Romney and other RINOS are going to put the hammer down when Obama loses and libs riot? They are going to and it’s self-delusion to think they won’t. So 4 more of Obama = end of America. 4 years of Rino Establishment types allowing Obama supporters to run riot unfettered and the O admin to escape untouched (as the repubs in power are doing RIGHT NOW = end of America.
It does not take an advanced degree in the science of Rocketry to see the big picture.
Stand like men or cower like rats. That’s our choice. And if we cannot win on Conservative values and principles after the mess the Communist left us, then America really is already over and we need to come to Jesus meeting with that realization.
I fervently hope Romney doesn`t get the nom either, but I despise him less than I despise Obama.
” Mormons voting for the Mormon regardless his political record or philosophy are just as bad as people who vote their race or gender. “
I agree. I see no distinction whatsoever.
Awww.. boo hoo hoo.
Look at the poor pitiful whiny Mittbot sitting in it’s shi... nevermind.
The trouble with getting quotes from the Internet is determining if they are genuine.

“I fervently hope Romney doesn`t get the nom either, but I despise him less than I despise Obama.”
IF you are implying that you will vote Romney if he is the Republican candidate then the following applies to you:
Sounds like you are going to let the bastards scare you into voting for the least scary bogyman.
You need to grow a set of balls.
Nope, I’ve read enough of Oberfurer Buchanan’s lies and anti-semitic tribe first hand that I know him to be a piece of garbage unfit to be called a conservative.
Drop supporting the Nazi apologist, my friend and obnoxious attitude.
I guess you didn`t catch the meaning of my statement, i.e., if Romney is the nominee.
And so your choice would be to hide under your bed and not vote for either, thereby helping to ensure four more years of Obama? Or falling into the idealistic trap of voting third-party, again helping Obama?
Set of balls, you say?
Choose whatever path you will, but I`m anti-Obama. For me, that comes first.
Sure, that’s why President Reagan hired Buchanan as his White House Director of Communications.
Shame on you for doing the work of those who hate conservatives.
Reagan made a mistake. He made one with James Baker, too.
Pat “there are too many Jews on the Supreme Court” Buchanan has never met a Nazi he didn’t like.
He’s repeatedly like about the Holocaust, and has been disavowed by conservatives from Bill Buckley to Rush Limbaugh.
There’s a reason Pat is on the anti-semite MSNBC channel.
