OAKLAND -- Protesters who have brought the Occupy movement to San Francisco are fighting for the ability to camp out from one night to the next. But the scene in Oakland couldn't be more different.
Over the past nine days in Oakland, officials have allowed activists to construct an astonishing mini-city of more than 150 tents in a plaza outside City Hall, complete with a kitchen, a school and a first-aid station. Covering what was once a grass lawn is a layer of straw, and walkways made of wood pallets and cardboard.

In San Francisco, Mayor Ed Lee made clear that while he supports the "spirit" of the demonstrations, he will not tolerate protest encampments. Police have moved in twice in recent days to take down tents and confiscate camping gear from Justin Herman Plaza near the Embarcadero and from in front of the Federal Reserve Bank in the Financial District.

As Karen Boyd, a spokeswoman for Oakland, said Tuesday as she surveyed the tent city, "We need to make sure we're balancing fundamental First Amendment rights with the broader rights of the public to use this facility."
Oakland leaders have worked with protesters, sending them regular demand letters. A city bulletin Tuesday asked people to remove dogs - a television reporter was bitten on the sleeve Monday - and refrain from fighting, urinating outdoors, drinking, doing drugs and having sex.
The protesters, at their morning meeting, went through the bulletin line-by-line, and some expressed concern.

This is WONDERFUL. I can´t think of a finer thing to happen to Oakland. Wow, so GREAT this is good news. Ya´ll send the riff raff to Oakland now and support this noble cause. Woo...Hoo. Last time I was in Oakland it looked already like a hobo camp of the Great Depression, this will be Value Added. Yeah!
That's nice that the city is asking these people to refrain from these anti-social actions. On the other hand, some people don't even have to be asked.....

So how long will it take for disease to break out in one of these “camps” and the protesters sue the city?
