Mark Gibbs on E-Cat
October 18, 2011 2:24 P.M.
By Reihan Salam
At Network World, Mark Gibbs has a column on E-Cat, a low-energy nuclear reaction technology developed by the Italian inventor Andrea Rossi. It sounds, and most likely is, too good to be true. Gibbs projects what might unfold if E-Cat works as promised:
Let’s assume Rossi’s E-Cat works. What then?
From the demonstrated prototypes it appears that you could build E-Cats small enough to power a car or a house. Bundle a lot of them together and you could power a truck, a ship or an office block. Imagine a data center where each row of racks has its own really cheap power generator.

Now you have a world where oil only matters as a raw product for things like plastics so the oil economy as we know it could be dismantled within a few months. Production costs for anything would fall. The power grid would become obsolete. Power stations of all kinds would no longer be an environmental problem. The balance of economic power worldwide would change and, for example, OPEC would become a historical footnote.

The only risk, assuming that the E-Cat doesn’t become horribly radioactive after extended operation or produce some other kind of hazardous byproduct, could be global thermal pollution from so many power generators (if they are very cheap and not dangerous then niceties such as minimizing waste heat would be ignored).

We could see a world where ubiquitous power generation is so cheap it wouldn’t be worth metering (as a consequence, Rossi would become the wealthiest man in the world, assuming that all of the vested interests in the existing oil and power economies didn’t have him bumped off). [Emphasis added]
A public demonstration in Bologna is scheduled for the 28th of October.

As a thought experiment, it’s worth thinking through what might happen to the wold if “production costs for anything” were to markedly decrease. Might labor-intensive manufacturing in emerging economies take a hit? And if so, will this contribute to large-scale political unrest? Moreover, resource extraction is not just important to OPEC: Norway, Australia, Canada, and the United States, among many other countries, might see a pronounced internal shift of economic and political power. It’s all very intriguing.
This can’t be serious.

The article sounds very much as if it were hurriedly written in half an hour.
Could our “journalist” here have written this after a three day bender ... with his boss threatening to fire him?

I don't think I have seen an article claiming that Ecat will cause anthropomorphic global warming before.

A public demonstration in Bologna is scheduled for the 28th of October.

According to a statement by Rossi, this test may be private.

We will run also in self sustained mode, the periods will depend on many factors. In any case, the power output will be 6 times the power input. About the snakes: the time of the snakes is over. The start up of the 1 MW plant is the end of the mental masturbations of enviuos, wannabe theorists, lecturers of calorimetry and engineering. Now LENR goes to the market. The test will not be made by me, but by the Customers’ consultants. Time of chatters is over. Maybe the test will not be good, maybe: it will be the first time I will start up a plant of that dimension, but in this case the problem will be the Customer, not the bunch of imbeciles that instead of understanding that we actually made LENR a reality lose their time digging holes on the surface the water in the middle of the ocean to find the wine. And in the case this test will go not well, we will learn and remake another, and another, and another, but, be sure, we will arrive to the target. At any cost.

As a thought experiment, it’s worth thinking through what might happen to the world if “production costs for anything” were to markedly decrease.

The "dividend" that would be produced in this scenario would be immediately spent by politicians and other elites. It would be converted into a larger dependent class, a larger guaranteed voting block for them. It would be used to supress individual initiative, to undermine thrift, and to devalue self-control and delayed gratification.

In the not-too-distant future, robots are going to displace a huge percentage of the low-skilled work force, already such a hassle to employ. Politicians are going to immediately scarfe up and coddle this segment of society with excuses and promises, trapping them and their decendants in the never-ending cycle. They will be used as yet another ballast load in the never-ending struggle to reach the tipping point.

BTW, thanks for the articles Kevmo. I read every one.

NRO is considered a blog?????

A blog is something like Billybobsonline and then the author turns out to be Billybob pimping his blog. I see it all the time and those are the ones that bother me.

***I was wondering when someone would catch that. I would have expected something like that from a librul rag, but I can no longer keep from being disappointed in NRO.

Well, doggone fella' the robots are already displacing about 90% of mid-level management in every country on Earth.

You might not notice it but I was there when it happened ~ just BANG, no more management positions ~ all at once it's specialists and analysts with computing power that could have displaced all the intelligence forces in all the armies on Earth during WWII, and on their wrists watches built out of scrap computer chips that were still more powerful than anything we had built up until 1960!

It's time for the working class to find itself DISPLACED BY MACHINES!

It's only fair!

Intriguing you betcha... Makes you wonder what it would be like to be with Tim Berners Lee the first time he demonstrated his “www” and “http” stuff for the first time, and realize wow, this could change the way the world works.

That’s really going to prove your case .. you never responded to the dns record for that new distributor/customer of Rossi having a 2.95 domain hosted on a server just setup in January that isn’t even registered to do business in the United States and referenced a fake corporate headquarter based in New York State.

This is so freaking fake, anyone who would give this even cursory scrutiny of the facts would find Rossi a failed con artist with shills hawking his greatness to the world.

Clocks a ticking .... October is here and people are going to start pressing the fraud button and the authorities are going to prosecute this guy this time. He has crossed multiple Federal and State Laws now.

!ALERT! BLOG POSTED AS NEWS ABUSE - HUNDREDTH TIME !ALERT!

This is an NRO blog regurgitation of the same article Kevmo has already posted two nights in row. And once again, it's a big "what if" fantasy by an author that didn't check Rossi's background.

The stories I find more intriguing are the guys who gave up when they were inches from pulling diamonds out of the mine. Like Xerox — they had the personal computer, ethernet, the GUI all wrapped up and could have OWNED the whole market. A genuine, $Trillion mistake.

Or HP, when they signed off on the two Steves to make that apple “computer”.

Or the guy who went flying the day IBM showed up to ask him to write an OS for the Personal Computer.

That kind of thing.

I respectfully disagree. Rossi is a failed, but still practicing con artist.

Clocks a ticking .... October is here and people are going to start pressing the fraud button and the authorities are going to prosecute this guy this time.

There's a post over at NRO saying the Oct 28th magic show will be private.

***It was not worth responding to.

And, chasing me from thread to thread is stalking.

If you’re so concerned Rossi is going to give the slip to the authorities, I suggest you contact them with this information. Maybe they will care more than me. Best of luck with that, and T4BTT, thanks for bumping the thread.
