Minnesota Congresswomen and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has become the latest politician to call for an impenetrable fence along the entire length of the border with Mexico. "President Obama has failed the American people by failing to secure the southern border," said Bachmann. "I will secure that border and that will be Job One."
Statements like that may get some attention, but they are not practical. Don't take our word for it; take Rick Perry's.
The Texas governor has been called a lot of things, but he's hardly a mushy liberal. Yet even this tough Texan sneers at calls for a Berlin Wall-style border fence spanning hundreds of miles from Brownsville to El Paso.
Two reasons: We can't afford it, and we don't need it.
The cost of a barrier like that would be staggering, certainly in the billions. Bachmann and others are silent about how they would pay for it.
Moreover, it is unnecessary. The Texas-Mexico border includes many miles of desert that are either lightly populated or devoid of any human presence. Illegal immigrants don't cross there. They make their moves along urban corridors.
Perry knows this because he is the governor of Texas. He knows the issue is more nuanced - like his support for in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants.
Secure the border? Absolutely - but in an intelligent way that puts our resources where they will have the most impact.
Voters should be wary of sound bites from candidates that fire up special-interest groups but lack logic. The next president will need real ideas, not gimmicks, to solve the challenges facing this nation.
“Now hereâs a president who would truly secure our borders!”
She’s not going to be the president. Very accomplished lady but she’s not going to be the president. Every time I turn around I read there are illegals involved in some criminal activity in Georgia or Virginia.....or New York. Sophisticated criminals who can produce I’d cards, run prostitution rings, steal credit card info, etc. WWMBD? Are we to build fences around New York? Her words would have some meaning if she would say, “I’m going to stop the Department of Justice from interfering with the states efforts.”. Every time one of our states tries to solve the problem, the AG stops it. Then the state has to spend a fortune defending it’s actions in federal court. It’s NOT about tuition! No one comes here so they can pay in-star tuition. Get real!
How can the folks who wrote this keep a straight face? The slightest awareness of border crossing patterns shows that heavy traffic over the SE Arizona border - rugged desert terrain - started after the urban CA corridor was fenced. And that technology without a fence - the failed virtual fence - did not stop it.
Fencing urban corridors in Texas will just shift traffic westward in a similar manner to what happened in the far SW. I have seen the illegals walking remote Hill Country roads in the early morning on their way to San Antonio and Austin. Having to cover a hundred-plus miles on foot across remote terrain is no barrier to them.
Oh, and the 35 foot ladder? It's hard to run away from the BP when you have a broken ankle from the 30 foot drop on the other side.
If you had a clue, CW, you wouldn't post stupid crap like this chock full of La Raza talking points and out-and-out falsehoods. Perry's critics on illegal immigration aren't going to be swayed by reheating the same BS that got Perry in trouble in the first place. Perry will have to come around convincingly on this issue to get traction, and every time a Perry shill like yourself tries to pretend otherwise, it just makes it harder to convince the skeptics that Perry is serious about this issue.
I'd still vote for Perry in the general, if he makes it that far.
I’ve lived in Arizona.
I live in Texas.
I know the areas.
I do have clues.
You really need to find a way to discuss things w/o resorting to personal attacks.
Bad idea, messing with Texas.
The lawmen chased the truck along the river, with a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter swooping overhead and Texas game wardens roaring down the Rio Grande in boats, state authorities said. In minutes, the traffickers had ditched the truck in the muddy water and were rafting the dope back to Mexico.
Then the shooting started.
Alone among his Republican rivals running for president, the Texas governor has a small army at his disposal.........."
IF you'd rather NOT be pinged FReepmail me.
IF you'd like to be added FReepmail me. Thanks.

Hard to tell when you post crap like this.
You really need to find a way to discuss things w/o resorting to personal attacks.
It's telling that you whine like a little girl instead of countering my points. Because you can't. The line about illegals not crossing remote desert areas is bullcrap and you know it if you follow news from SE Arizona.
Oh, and pointing out that you posted an article full of bullbiscuits is hardly a personal attack, unless the person posting such doesn't want that pointed out. If you want folks to not rip into what you post, post better articles than this.
“Are you suggesting that no fences or physical barriers be built?”
No. Not really.
I only have one suggestion. Every state is different. Let the individual states handle their individual problem. One size does not fit all. Get the Feds off of the backs of the states. Stop suing our own states for trying to control illegals from sneaking in. The Justice Department is on the side of the illegal, not the state.
I posted the facts.
You only pound the table.
Sorry Cain doesn’t get off that easy.
I think people should make this crazy comment a reason to NOT vote for Cain. Just to be consistant /s
Regarding E-Verify:
Perry is on record that he will use e-verify IF and WHEN the system has it’s flaws corrected and is accurate.
He said if he became President, that he would get this programs errors fixed and up to par. Then it could be used with accuracy and he would be for it.
Perry is NOT protecting illegals by say this but is in fact protecting American Citizens from being refused a job due to an inaccurate system.
In 2007 a study done for DHS found the error percentage was too high for it to be mandated. The report found that “the database used for verification was still not sufficiently up to date” which was a requirement for accurate verification. The Social Security Administration estimated that 17.8 million records contained discrepancies related to name, dob or citizenship status. And that 12.7 million of those pertained to US Citizens. Only 72% of lawful permanent residents and 63% of immigrants authorized to work in the states were confirmed automatically.
In 2010 another report found that it had improved from 92% acccuracy to 97%. It noted that it remained vulnerable to identity theft and to employer fraud.
The 81 page report was titled “Employment Verification:
Federal Agencies Have Taken Steps to Improve E-Verify,
but Significant Challenges Remain.
The report can be found here:

“Oh brother....Rick Perryâs word. What liberalism will he spew today. Michele bachmann is a hero who took one for the conservative movement by ridding ourselves of the rodent named Perry. “
There is a new barrier to meaningful employment. It challenges applicants who reach a certain interview status. It’s called saying, doing, posting something really stupid on Facebook. Your employer or potential employer may be able to use your words to fire or not hire. I would imagine it works for just about every posting site. I can’t even imagine a military person on active duty with a family, speaking out in an almost threatening manner repeatedly, against someone who could potentially be their commander in chief. Can you? Just a passing thought.
This is a fact?
The Texas-Mexico border includes many miles of desert that are either lightly populated or devoid of any human presence. Illegal immigrants don't cross there. They make their moves along urban corridors.
That statement is easily refuted by what is happening along the CA and AZ borders.
You only pound the table
So to you, pointing out a blatant lie is pounding the table.
And you wonder why Perry is sinking like a brick when his hacks like you are out spreading manure like this around.
Doubling and tripling down on stupid and denying stark reality is no way to turn a campaign around.
Fine. Fine.
That’s a nice dirtboy.
So show me where I’m wrong. Try using facts and links instead of your stupid whining.
Oh, and the 35 foot ladder? It's hard to run away from the BP when you have a broken ankle from the 30 foot drop on the other side.
ROFLMAO
They don't have a couple of minutes to put up a ladder, tie a rope and lower themselves down.
That's a lot of time up in the air and visible to the BP. They tend to just jump and take their chances. And several have broken their ankles and/or legs in the process.
Your unwillingness and inability to deal with the issue raised is duly noted.
