Over on Network World where Ive had a gig as a columnist for about 18 years, my Backspin column I wrote this week about a power generation system called E-Cat that is to be tested on October 28th .
If youve missed the recent brouhaha over the E-Cat (which stands for Energy Catalyzer), youre missing out on a three ring circus over a technology that will either change everything or change nothing because what is promised is, in theory, power too cheap to be worth metering .

Unless this thing can make steam much hotter than demonstrated, the question of size is moot. There is not enough delta T to efficiently turn a turbine.
If they can make high quality steam, there are turbines you can hold in your hand, think turbocharger. A high efficiency alternator also fits in your hand. That just leaves the size of the heat generator, a small boiler and a radiator on the back.
I still have not seen evidence that I consider convincing, but if it works, a steam turbine generator could be crammed into a box that would look a lot like a stand up freezer. It would be loud though, I wouldn’t want it in my house.
Rossi’s experiment would be a lot more convincing if he would generate electricity and then run it at over-unity.
My comment was assuming a very low yield of heat...so I imagined a miniature nuclear plant(one that doesn’t require radiation containment) that needs a very large core to boiler ratio with lots of surface area and a relatively small amount of water. There would probably need to be a sophisticated pump or series of pumps or series of valves to maintain proper circulation in a boiler like that, not to mention steam separators and a very large space for steam vapor in comparison to boiler size. Then you need a system to condense the spent steam back to a liquid for the pumps. All of these systems will need to be accessible for maintenance.
All in all, I’m thinking floor space of a one car garage.
look up how much horsepower a stanley steamer made. If you think you can make enough electricity for a whole house with a lawnmower engine, THINK AGAIN buddy boy.
The only part of FR that I know that has "caucus rules"is the "Religion" forum. If there are others, show me.
Because it "is" a separate issue. His credentials or lack of same have zero effect on the data that comes out of the tests/demos.
"As for your discrimination between scientific fraud and financial fraud, keep in mind that Rossi has taken money from investors and has already tried to franchise his product."
Really.....prove it. The ONLY deal that was signed and public was that with Defkalion, and that was on the sole condition that Rossi got paid by Defkalion ONLY if his product performed to specs. That fell through not because of anything "Rossi" did, but because Defkalion couldn't raise the money. And if you'll look into his current requirements, the only difference between what he wants now, and the Defkalion deal is that the franchise fee has to be put into an escrow account up front, NOT paid to Rossi. Rossi STILL doesn't get paid unless his technology performs as specified.
"His goal, IMHO, is to defraud a bunch of people with his E-Cat story."
The above franchising conditions are NOT set up to benefit a scam. And in fact, given those conditions, a scam cannot possibly work.
According to Google.....the equivalent of 15KW. And not precisely "garage-sized". Now.....add the technology advances demonstrated for the prototype steam cars from the 1970's, and I think you'll find you CAN power your house with a system "slightly" smaller than "garage sized".
The E-cat of the 6 October demonstration is rated 27KW. As run, it was throttled WAY back (only one "core" of three being run).
FR Caucus rules
It was just a suggestion. I am ignorant of the particulars.
I sure didn’t know discussing the merits of E-cat was such an devisive issue. E-cat religeous Caucus, members only. LOL!
“The E-cat of the 6 October demonstration is rated 27KW.”
He demostrated low quality steam, even if he can boil water with 27kW of heat output, we’ll be lucky to see 1kW of electricity generated with wet steam.
If he can get the temp up to 300-400 degrees, 27kW of steam will only make about 5 kW of electricity in the real world.
Describing heat output in kW is using a correct unit but leads to confusion because heat does not equal electricity.
Until more information is available, believing in the product is a matter of faith. Matters of faith always elicit strong emotional reactions, on both sides.
The Near-Earth Asteroid, Eros, has plenty.
IIRC, it is in the billions of tons.
Sure, I can easily prove that Rossi has already taken money. There are many reports that Rossi has already sold licensing rights to Ampenergo for an undisclosed sum. Unless these reports are false, or Rossi sold said rights for a pittance, you can see that Rossi has already gained financially from this endeavor.
As has been said over and over.....the early E-cats are intended for heat generation only, and "wet steam" is actually BETTER for those applications.
"If he can get the temp up to 300-400 degrees, 27kW of steam will only make about 5 kW of electricity in the real world."
Except that we already know that a temperature of +400C can be generated ((Defkalion). So that datum is already available.
Then do so. Let's have some links.
You can stop repeating yourself. I heard you the first time. Now hear me.....I DON'T GIVE A DAMN about innuendo and speculation, which is all you have. So you can stop trying to sell that to me.
The technology will either prove out or it won't. And that will happen due to the generation or failure to generate HARD DATA. Thus far, the HARD DATA available supports Rossi. Can it still be a scam...yes. But if it is, finding out how it was done will be almost as much fun as if it turns out to be real.
So unless you can come up with something actually new to say, don't bother me again.
For someone who claims to have a doctorate in Chemical Engineering, you sure are accepting of someone who falsely claims academic bona fides.
I hope that if Rossi is unmasked as a scammer, that your apology on this forum is as forceful as your current defense of Rossi is.
I’m more than happy to address facts if we get facts determined.
For instance, has the Pons-Fleishmann effect been replicated more than 14,700 times, or not? The seagulls only want to focus on one set of facts. If you accept certain things as facts, it doesn’t mean that other seagulls will.
. It is not a research seminar being given by you, that people should respect, listen quietly, and behave mannerly.
***Yah, it’s Free republic, where we expect more from fellow conservatives.
I’ve been here a long time as well, long enough to recognize the spirit behind the temperament of seagulls & trolls and it is invariably non-conservative.
Why don’t YOU acknowledge some facts first?
Like, how is it he’s recorded Heat After Death for 3 hours? The explanation of stored heat defies laws of thermodynamics.
So you pick your facts, I’ll pick mine. I’m more than happy to horsetrade facts, but your seagull friends will not honor the deal.
