In the first threat of its kind, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Karim Abedi, stated that Iran was capable of occupying Saudi Arabia if it chooses to do so.

"Iran's military forces have the ability to strip Saudi Arabia of its security whenever it wants and Saudi Arabia will not be capable of responding," he said.

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States are not oblivious to the threat to the region, indeed to world peace, posed by Iran.

These countries have been modernizing their militaries, have been quietly replacing central Asian Muslims among their guest workers with east Asian and African Muslims, and have been quietly extending citizenship to migrant workers, in order to better resist the Iranian threat.

They have also been engaging their own people, holding elections, enfranchising women, and so forth, admittedly slowly in Saudi Arabia, again for the same purpose, to increase national identity and patriotism.

There is, of course, no path to Saudi Arabia except through countries with which we have close ties. We have FTAs and Major Non-Nato Military alliances with almost all of the Gulf States. The lack of religious freedom in Saudi Arabia makes such a close relationship impossible at this time. But, who knows, with continuing change, even at a slow rate, we may be able to negotiate an FTA and military alliance with Saudi Arabia in the future.

We, being the United States, truly wish for every nation in the world to be militarily secure, democratic, prosperous and free. We understand that cultures differ. We don’t require Singapore, for example, to de-criminalize chewing gum. But, we do attach some limits to close association.

And let’s not forget that our long-time ally Turkey is now staring in the eye of the dictator of Syria. One by one, the dictators of the world will be taken out, not that every step in the path is in the right direction.

But we tend to lok at things where we (our culture and faith) value the gift of life...

I do not see ANYTHING in “their” faith that stands for ANYTHING but deceipt, treachery, domination and death to those that do not believe as they do...

So as far as I am concerned, they’d rather destroy and lay waste to something, than try to administer and control something that would become more of a liability, both culturally and politically...
