President Barack Obama will highlight portions of his jobs plan that encourage the hiring of unemployed veterans when he visits Langley Air Force Base in Hampton Wednesday during the final leg of his three-day bus tour through Virginia and North Carolina.
White House officials said Sunday that during the president's tour of two key Southern states in his reelection bid, he will call on Congress to start passing parts of his American Jobs Act this week starting with provisions which create jobs for teachers, police officers, fire fighters and veterans.
"He'll discuss the importance of job creation and putting our brave men and women who return from battlefields back to work and into good paying jobs," said Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest in a conference call with reporters.
First Lady Michelle Obama will join the president at Langley to help make the push to gain public support for the American Jobs Act. She will announce "a major private sector initiative to hire veterans and military spouses" as part of her Joining Forces Initiative, Earnest said.
The American Jobs Act includes tax credits for long-term unemployed veterans and businesses that hire veterans with service-related disabilities.
The president's visit to Langley Air Force Base is closed to the public.
