At two campaign rallies in Tennessee on Saturday night, the Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the countrys border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.
But by Sunday morning, in a dramatic change of tone, Mr. Cain, a former restaurant executive, said he was only kidding.
Thats a joke, Mr. Cain told the journalist David Gregory during an appearance on NBCs Meet the Press, where he was asked about the electrified fence. Thats not a serious plan. Ive also said America needs to get a sense of humor.
Mr. Cains attempt to pass off incendiary comments as nothing but a joke may take more effort, however. In making the initial remarks about an electrified fence killing illegal immigrants, Mr. Cain was detailed and repetitive. He did not introduce his thoughts as anything but serious commentary, beginning with the words, We have a crisis of illegal immigration.
And the crowds responded with cheers, not laughs.

Yeah, Perry has all the virtues were supposed to like around here.
Ive been thinking about the vitriol and I think it boils down to a growing hatred for Mexicans and for illegals which is somehow being blamed on Perry.
Admittedly, he wasnt great in defending the school thing but it is basically a nothing issue: nothing in money and nothing in being any different than a lot of other states.
People are projecting their hatred of illegals onto Perry.
Not fair.
Cain slipped big time. Whos left? Romney, Gingrich and Perry. Its funny how people who despised Gingrich before the debates are falling in love with him.
Who wouldnt? Hes smart, glib and could talk the birds out of the trees, but would he fail again when the rubber met the road?
We know Perry wont.
So, did you know Cain was joking or not?
Thanks for confirming that immigration has been hijacked by the hispanic lobby in the U.S. It's as if no one else matters but hispanics.
That is total baloney anyway. At the height of the immigration protests in 2006, when tens of thousands of illegal aliens took to the streets, a poll was taken in Tucson that showed 45% of hispanics there supported tighter border control. The further away you get from the border the less sympathetic to illegal aliens hispanics will be until you get to the northeast where even the Republicans are liberals.
That was an excellent post, thanks for re-posting it.
I’ve been here since before you turned into a complete idiot. If you want to take it outside, okay.
But if you continue to personally harass me, I shall call abuse on you.
I mean it.
There ya go. Auto-goal.
Thanks kristinn.
post #285However, I was definitely considering Cain, there is a lot I like about him. I kinda like his 9/9/9 plan.
But this Obama moment (as in when Obama took the black professors side against the police officer that resulted in the stupid beer summit) where Cain did a knee jerk attack on Perry for very flimsy and questionable reasons (an unverified NY Times story) has made me question his attitude.
Im very afraid now that hes a little too racist for me in spite of being a staunch conservative on most things.
Everyone's a racist aren't they? You toss that race card around like confetti.
I bet you thought he ACTUALLY wanted to put moats and alligators on the border, too.
Now according to this thread from FR, it seems he was joking in November 2010 when he wrote an article strongly against the National Sales Tax or he may be joking now for having the National Sales tax as a center piece in his stupid 9-9-9 tax plan. Here is the Cain the TALKER November 2010 article as posted in Today thread on FR:

American needs to learn how to take a joke Cain said last month, it seems that the joke is really Herman Cain himself.
Especially so...with your interesting FReeper name.
“Isnt Mexicos unemployment rate less than ours? If so, why would they even come here unless its for the freebies or theyre up to no good and figure theyll be protected here?”
Maybe they’d come here for $12 per hour instead of $2?
Would you?
Just wonderin’...
Right, because I’ve never answered any questions about Perry. That is almost as ignorant a statement as when you made a fool of yourself trying to tell people that Rick Perry personally painted the n-word on a rock.
Perry is hardly the “establishment” candidate. He was the candidate of the conservative wing of the republican party (not the outsider fringe). He was the serious answer to the Romney problem, the guy who had experience, was well-liked by the tea party but didn’t scare the mainstream, had the blessing of conservatives, and the ability to raise the money needed for the race.
Bachmann was taken out by Palin supporters who saw her as a threat. They attacked her for Ed Rollins, they attacked her again for “unnamed staffers”, they made fun of her eating a corn dog, they attacked her for claiming she was friends with Sarah Palin.
Perry didn’t really say anything about Bachmann. He was simply the next in line to be destroyed to clear the field.
So they only make $2/hr down there?
If so, wonder what the difference in cost of living is - for sure it’s cheaper there.
Why post all those lies and ingorance, I will answer just one of your stupid comments. The federal government has been paying farmers all over this country to fence off running water from farm animals. They also have a program, of direct payments and credits for the frigging water pumping system. Now do not give me any more of your BS, you do not know anything.
If I tried I could not come close to your BS.
That is a totally made-up charge with no basis. There is no evidence that any illegals come to this country to send their children to college. Texas doesn't give free college education to illegals or legals. Every state gives free education to illegals through high school, it is required.
The number of kids who are not currently legal but who attend a texas college while paying in-state tuition is around 10,000. I know that's 10,000 too many, but I think we can manage it in a country of 300 million people.
Obviously Cain will protect the borders
Actually, I don't see how that can be "obvious". He nas no record of every doing anything to "protect" the borders. He talks a good game, but has never taken any action to do anything. And when he does talk, he sometimes jokes about it rather than taking it seriously.
Perry, on the other hand, is the only candidate in the race that has actually taken concrete steps to defend our border. He's spent hundreds of millions of dollars defending our border. He's detained illegals and turned them over to the feds, who won't deport them. He's jailed them and billed the feds, who won't pay for them. His law enforcement agencies risk their lives to repel the invaders.
His state prohibits illegals from having drivers licenses, he's opposed sanctuary cities and asked for a special session to deal with that very issue. He has petitioned the feds to step up and do their job to protect the border.
NumbersUsa rates Perry as GOOD on border security. Perry has a plan to secure the border, using fences where they make sense, putting more boots on the ground. He also has a plan to deal with immigrants who come here legally, but then overstay their visas and become illegal, by reforming and strengthening the guest worker laws. Sealing the border is useless if you don't also make sure that people who come into the country leave when they are supposed to.
So I know the argument against Perry on border security is a crock, and I have no idea if Cain will follow through on his words, or if he'll say he was joking (I suspect he'll do something, but he'll never build a fence across the entire border).
Perry was not offended enough by an insensitive word on a rock when he saw it to have it removed
He was offended enough as a young adult in the early 1980s that he TOLD his father about it, and made sure the rock was painted over to hide the offending words. The rock didn't belong to him or his family, and it was a huge boulder, so it's not like they could just pick up the rock and throw it in a dumpster.
Cain didn't "point it out", the left wing media did. Cain just opportunistically made it a racial attack on Perry, who from all ACTUAL evidence doesn't have a racist bone in his body. Of course, when Cain was called out on his using the race card, Cain took it back, claiming he wasn't really talking about Perry (A variation on the "I was just joking" defense).
ping to post making personal attacks on another freeper without the courtesy of pinging them to the attack so they can defend themselves.
And yet when Perry didn’t use “calculated, measured, political soundbytes” he was castigated because some people’s feelings were hurt.
