MEXICO CITY Mexican President Felipe Calderon said Friday that the violence-plagued Gulf coast state of Veracruz had been left in the hands of the brutal Zetas drug cartel.
Calderon has complained in the past that previous governments allowed Mexico's cartel problems to grow and didn't do enough to stop them. But he hasn't previously suggested a state was largely turned over to traffickers.
In comments to a meeting of crime victims' groups in Mexico City, Calderon did not say specifically who he thought was responsible.
"I believe Veracruz was left in the hands of the Zetas, I don't know if it was involuntary, probably, I hope so," said Calderon, who added that "if we hadn't taken on organized crime, they would have taken over the country, I assure you."
There have been persistent accusations against former Veracruz Gov. Fidel Herrera Beltran, who left office in December 2010. While his term was relatively calm in terms of violence, adversaries accuse him of allowing the Zetas to operate freely in the state, which is lucrative route for migrant and drug traffickers.
Herrera Beltran has denied those accusations, claiming they are politically motivated.
Since mid-2011, Veracruz has been hit by dozens of murders and shootouts, including a grenade attack on a boulevard that killed one Mexican tourist. The state has been the scene of bloody turf battles between the Zetas and gunmen apparently linked to the Sinaloa cartel, and in recent weeks there have been two mass killings in which 67 bodies were found.

This news is sure to enrage the Hillary, whose State Dept. armed the Zetas via Foreign Military Sales.
I’m very eager to see all of the proper licenses that authorized all that.
I’m sure she’s eager to make it all clear, you know?
Felipe needs to quit spending so much time worrying about America’s business and start putting a little time in worrying about that sewer down there.
I am sorry, but I do not understand.
Isn’t Vera Cruz a part of Mexico?
Isn’t Calderon the President of Mexico?
If Vera Cruz is in the hands of the drug Cartels, doesn’t that make him responsible?
Why hasn’t he sent in the Military?
To answer my own question, the Government of Mexico is not in control of their country. The Military cannot be trusted, the local police are either in the pay of the Cartels or frightened to carry out the laws of the State.
Calderon is a mere figurehead with no power to run his own country. he cannot stop them from coming across the border even if he wanted to, and he has lost total control to the Drug Cartels.
In the meantime American Companies are building plants in Mexico and sending American jobs there never to return.
Whats wrong with this picture?

Ayyyyyyyy Carumba...!!!
Here’s the really interesting part about Calderone:
You would think with the myriad recent F&F revelations that EVERY SINGLE TIME he made a speech he would be lambasting Obama for it —we’d be hearing a steady drum-beat from him.
Instead, we hear almost NOTHING about F&F.
Isn’t that mysterious?
What do you think THAT means...? I give you ONE guess.
But wait, Moooochelle told us that Mexico is safe!

Maybe this is why the administration has decided to pull our troops out of Iraq this year. They know that sooner or later we’ll be sending them over the border to restore order.
These drug cartels need to be dealt with NOW...Mexico is going to collapse because of Corruption and the Cartels and when that happens the Flood of Illegal Immigrants to the US will become a Tidal Wave! Here comes the Mexican Narco State
Mexico has been a failed state since it’s inception. And so it continues, as our government pours billions of taxpayer dollars into this dark hole.
I doubt it, last I heard obama wants to send troops to Africa.
Jake, no insult intended to you, but, Mehico has collapsed. It is lost.
It is a narco-state in everything but name. And now, with the Presidente' acknowledging that "Veracruz" is lost to a narco-syndicate, it will go down at a faster rate.
Damn shame. Mehico is a resource-rich country with hard-working smart people. However, as was mentioned, it was doomed from the git-go by corruption controlling the means of access to education and business.
Build the wall...electrify it...station armed troops with live ammunition and orders to fire at intruders.
Oh, and that "War on Drugs" thing....we lost that a couple of decades ago.
I need two guess’s
Either he too is frightened of the Cartels or he is in their pay.
