Will tea party purists back imperfect Romney? (MSM says Tea Partiers can't win without Romney)
Communist News Network ^ | 2011-10-14 | Gloria Borger

After watching the GOP presidential debate the other night, it was hard to avoid this conclusion: Mitt Romney looks more and more like the GOP presidential nominee. He's the best debater. He's got his issues and his rejoinders down pat. He brushes away his opponents like lint on his lapel. And all with such ease.

That said, there's a teensy problem he just can't seem to beat: Conservatives don't like him. Or trust him. Or really want him to be the GOP nominee.

Sure, you say, Republicans never like their nominees, and they still manage to vote for them. There is truth to that: At this point in 2007, John McCain was still at 17% in the polls. Eventually, only Sarah Palin could make him palatable to conservatives. The Bushes were never right-wing faves. Neither were Richard Nixon or Gerald Ford. Even Ronald Reagan had candidates running to his right. And as for Bob Dole, well, he was suspect, but at least he was a war hero.

This year was supposed to be different. This was to be the time for the tea party to flourish and nominate a true believer. It's the moment, we were told, for an out-of-the-box Republican who would be against everything Barack Obama supports, like health care reform or bank bailouts.

Fine, except that Mitt Romney's Massachusetts health plan was a model for Obama (as the president fondly points out). And Romney told us during the debate that he supported the bank bailouts. ("Action had to be taken.")

If this keeps up, the tea partiers will be back at the harbor -- throwing themselves in.

Or, they can decide to suck it up and try to win.

I will write in Cain if I have to.

Amen. Will not vote for Romney if he gets the nomination. GOP can have fun losing if they want to push Romney.

Second that. He is no conservative, more of a moderate - a McLame look-alike. I will not support another one no matter who he picks as a VP - once was enough. He and Bush brought us Zero.

The tea party does not demand purity. As another poster mentioned, this is yet another straw-man from the left/media/RNC. The tea party is about smaller government, responsible government, and honest politicians who property government with the voters intent in mind. Romney is the polar opposite of the tea party and has purposely wanted nothing to do with it over the past two years. He an elitist, northeastern moderate to liberal big-government guy, and he in no way is appealing to conservatives. If he is the candidate, most tea-partiers will probably vote for him, but the motivation to donate, work, and fight is going to be much lower and will probably cost us the election.

In two election cycles, Romney simply hasn’t generated any passionate support. He couldn’t even run for reelection as governor for the same reason. He is not the guy to send into battle because the army behind him is minuscule..other than a few suited RNC beltway types.

Excellent post.

I don’t think Romney can get the R nomination without the support of crossover Dems in open primary states.

I saw it posted on another thread. If Romney gets the nominee they said they were staying home and not voting. If the country is going to be destroyed, they said they wanted it to be under a democrat president.

The MSM isn't really Main Stream at all....and frankly I'm not going to use that term anymore.

They are liars, and shade the truth every chance they get. In fact...I believe they are the most dangerous entity in the U.S.A.

There's history that proves this....

Should the tea party ever back the liberal Romney, the tea party would cease to have any meaning whatsoever.

That's right.

Exactly my intention as well.

Look at it this way - if ObamaRomney is elected the open rebellions ramp up as the whole mess collapses.

Then we start over.

That’s right, McCain was their favorite candidate among republicans in 2008. Nuff advice MSM, go help president Zero, he might need your help even more in 2012.

If Tea Partiers back Romney they negate and reverse everything they were striving for. They wìll be admitting that all their efforts were a wast of time and resources. Romney is the Democrat substitute and replacement for the crashing burning kenyan.
