Bartlett, Tenn. - Herman Cain lashed out at his critics Friday, accusing detractors of his 9-9-9 tax reform plan of trying to slow his newfound momentum with baseless attacks. During his first campaign swing since surging in the polls, Cain told a tea party crowd near his birthplace of Memphis that the plan would grow the economy by five percent at minimum, and pledged to pass it in his first 90 days in office.
Can yall see the bulls eye on my back? he joked to the crowd of several hundred supporters who had gathered in a city park here to see Cain. His critics, he said, dont know how to respond to a real solution to a problem.
Questions have mounted about Cains proposal, which would throw out the federal tax code and replace it with a nine percent flat income tax, a nine percent flat corporate tax and a nine percent national sales tax.
The name of the plan has become so synonymous with Cains upstart presidential bid that a supporter here held up a sign that read, Category 999 HURRICAIN.
Independent analysts who pored over the plan in recent days have said it would raise taxes on the poor and middle class. Fellow conservatives have warned that those nines could creep upward over time. And observers have noted that it would face an uphill battle in Congress.
Cain on Friday derided the former criticism as Washington math. He said that citizen pressure would prevent lawmakers from gradually raising the tax rate, which he called sneak-a-taxes. And the businessman said he is not afraid to promote a plan that is politically unpalatable.

Just to continue my last post, this is the underlying problem some of us have with 9-9-9. Unless you pass a constitutional amendment for 9-9-9 or for a straight flat tax, you cannot do anything to keep Congress from raising any of the tax rates in an equal or unequal fashion. You also cannot keep Congress from keeping the income tax and corporate tax, even though 9-9-9 is based on the assumption those taxes will eventually go away. Without a constitutional amendment, you’ll have a national sales tax forever, right along with an income tax.
How do I feel about it? I feel a plan like Cain’s will be our best, and probably last, chance to save ourselves from total collapse. The 49% that today pay no federal income taxes, used to be just 35%, then 40%, then 45%. Pretty soon that 49% will be 50.1%, and if we still have this same tax system at that point, it is GAME OVER.
We minority of working suckers will forever be outnumbered at the ballot box. The tyrannical free-loading majority will keep voting for and insisting on higher and higher taxes us who are paying for it all.
Ill tell you this: within a few years, when todays 49% becomes 50.1%, were going to see top marginal federal income tax rates going back to 90% or more, capital gains taxes going through the roof, massive taxes applied to 401(k) and IRA withdrawals, etc.
And it will be due to the stupidity of those who dont see this obvious train wreck coming and realizing the only hope of stopping it is to get *everyone* paying some federal taxes so that *everyone* will feel the pain whenever Fedzilla proposes more spending binges.
If you want to cling to the current corrupt tax code out of fear, then embrace the above scenario, because this is your future. It’s not some hypothetical that might happen in the future. It is *already* happening right now, and the magic tipping point (50.1%) is only just a few short years down the road. Enjoy.
Carl Rove was criticizing this locale but I believe Herman Cain has a plan that is clear. Rove thought he should be in Iowa.
To me, consumption taxes seem more fair, since those who consume the most end up paying the most tax. They also don't don't represent a massive intrusion into privacy rights, or discourage savings. The income tax does both of those.
Mr. Cain has stated repeatedly that the current tax code would be eliminated. The 999 puts every consumer on the hook. Raising that tax on ALL consumers would be a very tough sell.
Yeah you should be laughing, at how pig ignorant your comment was.
There is nothing in current tax code stopping Politicians from raising rates any time they want. It actually gets much harder to raise taxes under 9-9-9.
Since everyone pays everyone knows any tax hike will effect them directly.
But ou just cling to your worship of your American idol candidate Perry and leave the thinking to the adults
My current income tax of 25% would drop to 9% and my sales tax would be 18.25% with my state sales tax currently at 9.25%. I would lose some significant deductions but it’s almost a wash for me. At least now I know that drug dealers are paying 9% more on their lavish purchases.
Congress can simply raise tax rates anytime it wants to now.
It would be harder to raise taxes under 9-9-9 because everyone pays so everyone would know they would be paying more.
Right now given all the loopholes and gimmicks they hid most taxation behind a fake screen of "it's only a tax on Business" or "it's only a tax on the rich"
9-9-9 takes that away. Everyone pays therefore no one thinks they are getting a free ride if taxes goes up
Same critic applies even more so to the current tax code. So find a new attack line Perrybot cause that dog won't hunt. Congress can simply raise tax rates anytime it wants to now.

That takes my overall tax rate to 27.25% vs the 34.25% I have now.
and it whacks the hell out of the IRS and pick and choose winners and losers in the current tax code.
Same argument applies even more so to the current code so your complaint about 9-9-9 is irrational and childish.

What adults? All I see are people who have a cult following personality flip from Palin to Cain and make up assinine little sayings like “Cain Train” and such. That’s the behavior of adults? As is the sophomoric insults that you are attempting to hurl at me?
Me thinks you need to look in the mirror before you speak again.
What Cain should do on his website is this:
Offer a re-occurring campaign contribution of $9.99 a month.
Most people can afford $9.99 a month to support their favorite presidential candidate. Hey, it's just one less pizza a month!
Over 12 months, Cain will collect $119.88 from each contributor up until election day.
If six million people can participate in this program, this would result in $719.28 million being donated to his campaign. That's more than enough to run a first class campaign.
You just sit there and bask in the glow of your Perry worship and leave the thinking to the adults.
I like!
Received this from Cain campaign:
Dear Supporter,
I wanted to write and let you know that in the next few days you will be receiving an urgent letter from me. You may have heard on the news that the primary schedule is shifting around right now, and I need your help to respond.
Establishment Republicans in states like Florida, Nevada and South Carolina are talking about moving up their primaries, pushing traditional early contests in New Hampshire and Iowa as early as December in response.
This compressed schedule changes everything; the next 90 days may determine the Republican candidate for President of the United States of America.
Who is the best choice to beat Barak Obama in 2012? I believe that I am that candidate. And I think that you do too. But time is running out.
In the last 2 weeks our campaign has been on a dramatic trajectory; winning straw polls and ranking in the top tier of candidates in poll after poll. No one disputes that the Cain Train is on the move!
Unfortunately, winning a modern election takes dollars. Because I'm not a career politician, I don't have the network of fundraisers and the political machine my opponents do. If my story is going to get out to the rest of America, it is going to be because you believe in me enough to continue to support my campaign!
My message is simple, and powerful. Will you help me proclaim it far and wide?
Please be watching for my letter, and consider making another contribution to the campaign. The next 90 days are critical. In fact, you don't need to wait- will you support me today?
We have a donation page set up at our website; you can click here to give right now!
Thank you again for your loyalty and generosity!

If you see a thinking adult, please point them out to me. I know you’re not refering to yourself as a an adult...lol. Are you chanting the 9-9-9 mantra at night while burning the incense?
