Herman Cain lashes out at 9-9-9 critics

Bartlett, Tenn. - Herman Cain lashed out at his critics Friday, accusing detractors of his 9-9-9 tax reform plan of trying to slow his newfound momentum with baseless attacks. During his first campaign swing since surging in the polls, Cain told a tea party crowd near his birthplace of Memphis that the plan would grow the economy by five percent at minimum, and pledged to pass it in his first 90 days in office.

“Can y’all see the bull’s eye on my back?” he joked to the crowd of several hundred supporters who had gathered in a city park here to see Cain. His critics, he said, “don’t know how to respond to a real solution to a problem.”

Questions have mounted about Cain’s proposal, which would throw out the federal tax code and replace it with a nine percent flat income tax, a nine percent flat corporate tax and a nine percent national sales tax.

The name of the plan has become so synonymous with Cain’s upstart presidential bid that a supporter here held up a sign that read, “Category 999 HURRICAIN.”

Independent analysts who pored over the plan in recent days have said it would raise taxes on the poor and middle class. Fellow conservatives have warned that those nines could creep upward over time. And observers have noted that it would face an uphill battle in Congress.

Cain on Friday derided the former criticism as “Washington math.” He said that citizen pressure would prevent lawmakers from gradually raising the tax rate, which he called “sneak-a-taxes.” And the businessman said he is not afraid to promote a plan that is politically unpalatable.

Under Cain’s plan, with EVERYONE paying the same rates, there will be hell to pay for politicians voting to raise taxes. No more class warfare games, this would be a major blow to the progressive liberals. Problem is selling it to the public in the general election.

No? How long do you think it will be before that 9% for "the rich" becomes 10%, or 11%, or 12%?

Like the old saying goes, “No such thing as bad PR as long as they spell my name right”, and it’s spelled “Nine, Nine, Nine!”

Those type of people think they have a lot to lose by abolishing the present tax system...mostly people who are either CPAs, Tax Lawyers or are reliant on the handouts from this system.

I personally pay about 6% in federal income tax-thats federal income tax and not FICA. FICA is fixed at about 14.5% so my share is half of that.

I would gladly pay 9% and 4.5%-half of my FICA if it stays that way, just to see all the rest pay their “fair” share. I.E. Welfare cases, illegals and all.

Having talked to a couple of investor people I know that say that if passed, this plan would cause a skyrocket in corporate investment in this country. One, who works pretty high up in a big investment firm, said that all that cash that business is holding onto would be reinvested within a couple years. All businesses are looking for stability and confidence from the system. Until then, they are not spending anything.

999=Less than 4% unemployment in 2 to 3 years.

You are ready.

For every criminal liberal to vandalize your car.

While I might shoot any liberal I caught vandalizing my car, I can't watch it 24 hours a day. I had my car vandalized in the campaign of 1968, I haven't had a bumper sticker since, you may think that's cowardly of me but I think it's just not worth it. Liberals are vile, It wouldn't even occur to me to trash somebody's car because of a political bumper sticker, no matter how much I disagreed with it.

Oh, by the way, I do put political signs in my yard, I can keep closer watch on them and so far all the morons have managed to do is tear down a few of them. If I catch them at it, there will be a price to pay.

With the Velcro fasteners, you can remove the sign when it’s parked. The laminate is stiff and very durable.

The left will ALWAYS try to raise taxes, no matter what system is in place.

They will try to raise the Fair Tax to 27%, the Flat Tax to 30%...it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t make sense to discount an entire tax plan because the left will try to raise the rates. Of course they will!!! It’s what the left does.

At least 999 will make it obvious when they do try to raise it. It won’t be as hidden.

My wife and I heard Cain on the Michael Smirconish radio show this evening. Two things of note:

1. Cain asked the listeners, with regard to 999, to stop listening to the media critics and “do the math” on their own personal situation and see where 999 leaves them. We did the math with regard to my wife's 50K/year salary and she (on an annual basis) actually does better under 999 unless she were to purchase a large ticket item such as a new house or new car over 40K.

2. Smirconish questioned Cain on the assumptions that 999 was based on and Cain responded he will be releasing an OP-ED piece in the very near future laying out exactly how the 999 plan was derived. He also stated his campaign has provided (and will continue to provide) that data to any party who has requested it, however those requests have been few despite all of the criticism.

“Those criticizing Cain really seem to be defending a tax system that is a thousand times worse than his very straightforward flat 999 plan. Strange how liberal conservatives become when they actually get what they say they want...hmmm maybe they don’t really believe in small govt afterall.”

Good point. When I say that Social Security can (and will be, in any case) means-tested. Otherwise-good conservatives tell me “over my dead body, I paid into this scam for years”.

Seems that conservatives sometimes forget where they came from when it comes to principal.

“It is a all out, armagedeon style, war on the Government Industrial Complex.”

GREAT POINT. It puts K-Street (i.e., the lobbyists in DC) OUT OF BUSINESS. That in itself is a reason that EVERYONE should support it.

"No? How long do you think it will be before that 9% for "the rich" becomes 10%, or 11%, or 12%? "

So, how does that differ from what they can and have done with the current tax code? Yeah, there isn't a national sales tax, but if there were, all those not currently paying taxes in the bottom 47% (whatever the percentage is) will have to pay something and 9% income tax payers will have more disposable income than they do now to cover the additional sales tax.

9-9-9? Yes! Yes! Yes!

Just like the current tax system. So don’t try to claim that this makes raising taxes harder. It won’t.

What I would like to see with the 9-9-9 is shrinking government that would turn it into 5-5-5.

Even under 9-9-9 government is going to have to shrink. I wish Cain would spend more time on what he is going to do in that area rather than the 9-9-9 scheme.
