....Not all economists would put domestic energy production among their top five priorities for job growth. But many do see significant potential in this field, as the Perry campaign does.
For example, economist Peter Morici at the University of Maryland, in a recent analysis of the nation's employment crisis, wrote that "shutting down US oil and gas development is costing the US economy millions of jobs."
His view: An emphasis on domestic production could create jobs by dramatically reducing America's trade deficit, thus recycling more consumer dollars in the domestic economy. Promotion of energy production would also spill over into job creation in other industries, Mr. Morici says, as a need for refineries and pipelines boosts demand for construction workers, steel, and heavy machinery.
Even in Texas, the industries classified by the US Labor Department as "oil and gas extraction" and "mining support" account for just about 2 of every 100 jobs. But jobs in basic industries like mining or manufacturing typically help sustain many other jobs throughout a local economy. And over the past decade, Texas has seen energy jobs rise as a share of its economy.
Compared with Texas, other states appear to have plenty of room to grow. In the other 49 states collectively, the "oil and gas" and "mining support" industries account for less than 0.3 percent of all jobs. Those totals don't include some other energy-related jobs, such as in coal mining or renewable sources.
Obama, for his part, has called for some expansion of domestic fossil-fuel production, but has put his greatest emphasis on encouraging renewable sources of energy. Where the words "conservation" and "efficiency" appear nowhere in Perry's speech, Obama has backed programs to encourage energy-saving retrofits of buildings and a shift toward higher-mileage vehicles....

A weird thing happened a little earlier on Free Republic.
There was a thread about Cain’s 9-9-9 plan and the fact that it’s being attacked by some. There were quite a few posts, all supporting the plan and Cain.
Not one Perry supporter jumped on that thread to trash Cain.
But only 3 or 4 posts deep on any Perry thread, here come the Perry vultures, bringing up the same old worthless issues.
First of all, Perry always dishonestly uses the term “amnesty” to mean giving voting rights to the illegals, which is not the proper meaning of the word.
But if the position of the Perry campaign really is that business interests such as agribusiness, housing construction, fast food restaurants, etc., need the illegals, that the native Americans are unemployable, then he should be honest about that and make the case in favor of the illegals, instead of talking out of both sides of his mouth as if he is against illegal immigration.
And let the American people judge the long-term impact on our demographics and politics of a pro-illegals stance.
No we do not need you oil, I would much rather have bio diesel. But if you start a movement saying, screw the rest of the country, that you are keeping Perry for yourselves . I will support your efforts to punish the other 56 states. Virginia oil, the last time I checked comes out of the baltimore area, north sea crude. Less what comes from wells in pa and ohio and bio diesel.
That is your opinion and not fact...unless you are a mind-reader!
How do you rationalize that Perry just signed a voter photo ID bill if he wants to give illegals voting rights?
Do you work for Romney, Cain or Obama?
I took a vow not to respond to vicious and ill-informed Perry attackers.
Oh, well.
Texas is full of Mexicans. At least once they get here, they’re smart enough not to go north.
Most of them are legal. And yes, they do work that others won’t do, or at least others ARE NOT doing.
They do yardwork, construction, do roofing in the hot sun and they are cheerful, pleasant people.
I like Mexicans. They are not the enemy. Obama is.
The women do maid work and many of them work as care givers for elderly people and people with alzheimers. They are actually nice to these people, and work cheerfully without resentment about the work they are doing.
Once we get the borders closed ... never under Obama, but a real possibility under Perry, I think much of the resentment of Mexicans will fade away.
I live in a town close to Dallas which is majority minority. (Is that an oxymoron). It is a quiet, pleasant town with very little crime, but a heck of a lot of Mexicans.
I think some of the hysteria we see on the anti-Perry posts against illegals is really disguised racial prejudice against Mexicans, most of whom are legal, decent hardworking people.
Next thing you'll be telling us that we don't import oil!
Your position in favor of massive immigration from Mexico for the reasons you have stated is fine, at least you are being honest about it.
I disagree with that policy, for the reasons I have stated.
If Perry agrees with your position, then he is being dishonest trying to pretend to be against it.
The Voter ID thing is good, but it doesn't make up for his other positions.
Whether Perry "wants" to give illegals voting rights or not, as I have said in my opinion the American people are not going to sit still for a huge class of second-class citizens. Once Perry legalizes the illegals, it is only a matter of time before they have voting rights, if it doesn't happen at the same time.
Duh! Because most of you work in D.C.--for the federal government!...you're on our payroll!
ROFLOL!
Why?
You are a liar or awfully thick headed and ignorant. Your opinions have ceased to be worth crap!
You take that back, that is the worse thing I've ever been called in my life and I went through one hell of a divorce (Best $50,000 I ever spent). But really? That is your problem with Perry is you don't like Texans? Hey I like Virginia, I was just in Richmond about two months ago, hardly knew I wasn't home judging by the way the people treated me.
That's just silly, have you been to Texas? We know were proud, we love our state, we're proud of our history and we have every right to. Our state was formed when 181 men crossed a line knowing they will die. That's a lot to live up to and were damn proud of it. That don't make us bad, just proud.
Every democrat elected in the past 40 years has tried to kill our state, Jimmy watched too many episodes of Dallas and thought everyone here was JR and turned off the oil, Clinton went after the tech industry and Obama is turning off the power and is trying to flood us with illegals by bussing them from California and standing down the boarder guards. But each time Texas survives out of spite as much as determination. Because we have been handed four aces, The American Spirit, American know how, American determination and the absolute knowledge that clinging to the Founding Fathers ideals will always prevail when matched against any other system the Left wants to try to force on us.
What's not to like about that, our ideas are American Ideas, That's what Perry wants to force on this country and God Bless him for doing it!
Oh, and Go Rangers!!!!
Welcome to FR NOOB.
If you hate Perry so friggin much and you have so much disreguard for fellow FREEPERS, to call those whom support Perry at this moment in time, Perrywinkles,
well, really, you really should get on a different thread and post your vomit.
It’s not looked upon very well when you insult long time FReepers. Let alone when you’re a NOOB ~
How much does the Romeny campaign pay you to post here NOOB ?
Have a great day ~
How is that a lie? What the heck else you think he’s gonna do with illegals? LET THEM STAY, that’s what and they are already voting in Texas....
I'm sure there are many hardworking decent Mexicans IN Mexico. But preferably they'd take that energy and get rid of their governance in their own nation, and build up their nation to go along with their decent workers... rather than claim our states as Mexico's rightful land.
Texas is a hotbed of oil money....get enough Mexicans populated there, raise the Mexican flag, claim the borders as "one community", mention Texas ceceeding from the states, reclaim Texas and Arizona as their nation, and they'll all be rolling in the dough.
Any business model that relies on illegal labor is faulty. That business isn't really a business, it's criminal enterprise. It isn't complicated at all.
You're a poll watcher?
That's why he signed the photo ID voter bill.
