Rick Perry jobs plan: Make rest of America more like Texas -- Working
Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 14, 2011 | Mark Trumbull

....Not all economists would put domestic energy production among their top five priorities for job growth. But many do see significant potential in this field, as the Perry campaign does.

For example, economist Peter Morici at the University of Maryland, in a recent analysis of the nation's employment crisis, wrote that "shutting down US oil and gas development is costing the US economy millions of jobs."

His view: An emphasis on domestic production could create jobs by dramatically reducing America's trade deficit, thus recycling more consumer dollars in the domestic economy. Promotion of energy production would also spill over into job creation in other industries, Mr. Morici says, as a need for refineries and pipelines boosts demand for construction workers, steel, and heavy machinery.

Even in Texas, the industries classified by the US Labor Department as "oil and gas extraction" and "mining support" account for just about 2 of every 100 jobs. But jobs in basic industries like mining or manufacturing typically help sustain many other jobs throughout a local economy. And over the past decade, Texas has seen energy jobs rise as a share of its economy.

Compared with Texas, other states appear to have plenty of room to grow. In the other 49 states collectively, the "oil and gas" and "mining support" industries account for less than 0.3 percent of all jobs. Those totals don't include some other energy-related jobs, such as in coal mining or renewable sources.

Obama, for his part, has called for some expansion of domestic fossil-fuel production, but has put his greatest emphasis on encouraging renewable sources of energy. Where the words "conservation" and "efficiency" appear nowhere in Perry's speech, Obama has backed programs to encourage energy-saving retrofits of buildings and a shift toward higher-mileage vehicles....

$0. Actually, if Romney was paying me, I’d imagine he’d get me to praise Perry, since the only way Slick Willard can win is if Perry/Cain split the conservative vote equally. Luckily, Cain is blowing Perry out of the water right now though.

I agree. I live in a small town where illegals stand out. They work, they pay rent and they pay sales taxes.

Our majority minority (LOL!) is mostly living off taxpayers...in gov't housing, WIC cards, and welfare checks. They don't want to work...you couldn't give them a job.

The Mexicans here contribute to the local economy while blacks are a drain. There are more Mexican families...more blacks in single parents.

Any business model that relies on illegal labor is faulty. That business isn't really a business, it's criminal enterprise. It isn't complicated at all.

So what would you recommend landscapers, roofers, and construction owners do? Should they shut down and file for unemployment because they can't hire legal workers.

I'll be happy to relay any suggestions you might have.

Voter ID bill isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.... you can go to the local flea market any given weekend and get a fake Driver’s License that looks no different than the real thing.... Surely, if you live in TX you know that...

No, we don't have a flea market...but the address on the voter registration card will have to match the address on the DL. That will be a deterrent.

So, you volunteering to be a poll watcher?

The Perrywinkles seem to be extra aggressive today...must be switching gears from the failed "Cain is a Romney plant!" strategy to the new "rage at everyone who isn't a Perry fan" one. Fortunately, neither will stop the trainwreck.

You've been on FR 3 days already! ROFLOL!

A deterrent??? Lol... so you mean they wouldn’t think to register the same address on the voter registration that is on their DL..... ??? Really? Are you that naive???

And a gazillion poll watchers can not stop them if the have very realistic ID’s... when I say realistic, I mean you can’t tell the difference without running the DL#...

I guess I am...I don’t think they want “authorities” to know where they live. They are more motor-voter voters.

Doesn’t mean they have the address where they live on the license/voter registration...

But, really, if the authorities knew where they lived, do you REALLY think they would do anything about it? Nope, not Obama’s people, not Perry’s people

It would be up to the county clerks...254 of them.

What do you know about 254 county clerks?

Booming economy? Last I heard, the unemployed in Houston (among many other areas) were shelling out 1000s of resumes and getting jack $hit. How is that “booming”?

Houston may be known as Space City, but this week it has another new title:

THE JOB-CREATION CAPITAL OF THE UNITED STATES.

Houston added 65,600 nonfarm jobs between August 2010 and the same month this year, the biggest raw gain by any of the country's 100 major metros, according to statistics released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Should they shut down and file for unemployment because they can't hire legal workers.

They should hire legal workers, if that means paying more then so be it. If they can't then the should find other work. I have to follow the law so should everyone else.

As a consumer it makes no difference.

If my roofing job then costs 8% more using legal labor then I make up for in less social spending by the govt.

As a consumer it makes no difference.

Speak for yourself.

What you don't seem to understand is that the unskilled would-be workers who would be doing the work illegals do, are on welfare, they are lazy, and they are not going to work. They are career parasites.

Do you remember the stories that came out of the Sugar Dome after Katrina--desruction, fighting, killing, rape? The people doing it weren't illegal immigrants!

What kind of work do you do?
