I am curious as to why he bothered sending a letter to Speaker Boehner.
There was actually some part of the budget bill passed in the 2009-2010 session that provided money for humanitarian relief for this area. I’m not sure how the money has been spent to date or how much of it has been spent, but I assume this letter was sent to Boehner (pronounced Bay-ner, digger) because the funds were in that bill, although there was no indication that the money was to be used for military intervention.
And if he has 100 combat troops (plus their logistical support), he’s not planning on having them simply hand out relief supplies. Obama regards the US military as his personal hit squad, and I’m sure the Muslims have appealed for help in this case and he’s coming through with it.
That’s not to support the LRA, incidentally; it is a vicious, violent cult run by a psychopathic “prophet” and while its “resistance” is mostly against Muslims, it also attacks Christians, although its “prophet” originally saw himself fighting against the Muslims. But I don’t think our military intervention is warranted.
