Cain’s style: Simple solutions and a willingness to say ‘I don’t know’
Washington Post ^ | 14 Oct 2011 | Sandhya Somashekhar

Posted on 10/13/2011 9:28:56 PM PDT by Cronos

He opposes abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. He thinks Iran could be deterred from aggression by deploying more warships. And he is a proponent of privatized Social Security.

But just one topic — his “9-9-9” tax plan — has dominated Herman Cain’s rhetoric in this presidential race, helping to propel him to the top of Republican polls this month.

And that has prompted questions about what else he stands for and whether he has the breadth of knowledge — particularly on foreign policy — expected of an occupant of the White House.

An examination of Cain’s words — his remarks as a radio talk-show host, as well as his writings, interviews and speeches — shows a man thoroughly steeped in conservative ideology. He has said that climate change is a scam, that he would not have survived cancer under the Obama administration’s health-care overhaul, and that the United States is on the brink of a socialist takeover.

...“If you understand the simple concepts,” Cain writes in his recently published book, quoting an old teacher, “you will be able to deal with the complex concepts.”It is also in keeping with his candor and the everyman persona he has cultivated on the campaign trail. Conservative audiences have found something compelling in his story, that of an African American who grew up in the segregated South and rose to become a successful business executive.

..In recent interviews, Cain has called it hubris to claim to know the minutiae of every major issue.

He has extolled the importance of leaders surrounding themselves with able advisers (though he has demurred when asked who his advisers are). He has shown repeatedly that, when faced with a tough question, he is not afraid to admit he doesn’t know the answer.

Though on page 2 of the interview, i don’t think it’s very diplomatic to mock the name of Uzbekistan. he could have left out that “beki-beki..’ bit

Every time I see him in action; his style reminds me of a certain past President who was also an outsider who the Republican establishment tried to paint as an extremist and even called his economic plan “voodoo economics”.

We are currently enduring a resume-less, know nothing, teleprompter dependent, effing communist - I think Cain would be a GIANT improvement.

I admire his political incorrectness in most cases, but every politically incorrect is probably going to hurt someones feelings. So you are probably right.

And where was this concern in 2008?

A lot of our problems have simple solutions. Very difficult, but not complicated.

Liberal eggheads and liberal wannabe eggheads believe that anything difficult must by its nature be complicated. Too complicated for the masses to understand.

This hubris leads them to believe that a conservative stating the simple and obvious must be wacko. And admitting one doesn’t know the minutia of every problem is more proof to them of our stupidity.

Jimmy Carter was a micro manager, top down, and he agonized over every detail. Hence, paralysis at crunch time.

I’m trying to remember if the Washington Post ever wrote a sentence like this when doing stories on The One prior to his coronation. /sar

I think even a deaf, dumb and blind peacock that was repeatedly dropped on the head as a baby would be an improvement over Obambi!

Cain -- a guy who built himself up, turned around two businesses etc is a vast, vast, VAST improvement over O -- they're not even in the same universe in comparison.

noooo — you mean Obambi doesn’t know everything? what a jerk he is — he’s never been in business or run anything — he’s been just a vote-present senator, not a governor or even a Mayor.

Ha - Non-existent! It just depends whether you are a liberal willing to tread their waters via the MSM or go on your own.

Lets just say politely - MSM - just go away and let the people elect the next president! If that is not possible for your staff (actually don’t even begin to think that it is so), just quit the negativity against anyone who doesn’t meet your liberal standards (actually, also don’t believe that).

Of course, that is impossible (believe that), but it does at least set a benchmark.

I guess Obama is a real man too.

Cain is clueless. Did you see him on Greta the other night. I was like are you frecking kidding me and this man is running for POTUS.

The question was about the Iran Terror plot.

Cain didn’t have a clue and what made it really bad is that he followed Newt. Newt answered the same question in full detail.

Cain is a radio host and a con artist.

We put one con artist in the WH 3 years ago so lets put another one in there.

It is a common trait among successful businessmen.

Not so much with politicians.

I absolutely admire a person that is not afraid to say “I don’t know” (especially in a physician), but there is a reason politicians avoid it. More than twice in an interview or debate would be the kiss of death.

Cain is absolutely not clueless.

If he wants to have a serious shot at going all the way, he needs to dramatically upgrade his repertoire though. "999" will only get you so far.

What's not to know about foreign policy. Washington spelled out the plan over 200 years ago.

"The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is, in extending our commercial relations to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop."
